Single Minded: The Black Crowes, NIN, Bauhaus, Kathleen Edwards Every Tuesday Single Minded highlights new tracks hitting stores (or the Web) this week. On Fridays, come back for rarities, remixes, mash-ups and more. The Black Crowes, “Goodbye Daughters of the Revolution” [Official Site] Like Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails before them, the Robinson Bros. have self-released their latest record using bold marketing innovations. For just $15.98, fans can acquire the album on a shimmering silver disc, complete with plastic case and a cardboard insert with pictures on it. Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks, “Cold Son” [Matador] “I feel like a nympho stuck in a cloister,” goes one line in this new Malkmus single. God bless him. Sixteen years on, and we’re still not completely sure what he’s talking about. Nine Inch Nails, Ghosts I - IV [Free Partial Download] Trent Reznor released this album of instrumentals through his Web site Sunday night. We look forward to re-posting these songs two weeks from now, when they’ve been sloppily paired with a bunch of Lil Wayne a cappellas. Bauhaus, “Black Stone Heart” [MySpace] What a coincidence! Two days after Trent Reznor releases his new album, his acknowledged forefathers, Bauhaus, release their final one. We’d like to say this one hits the high standards of their impeccable legacy. We’d also like to say that the sky is made of chocolate, and that they are making a movie out of Legend of Zelda. Kathleen Edwards, “The Cheapest Key” [Official Site] What’s it going to take for Kathleen to get the hip cachet that Miranda Lambert has recently acquired? She’s been just as good for twice as long. The White Stripes Discover Small is Beautiful in Nova Scotia “Well, you’re in your little room, and you’re working on something good,” Jack White once sang. “But if it’s really good, you’re gonna need a bigger room.” “Little Room” was just a forty-five-second ditty on 2002’s White Blood Cells, but it also spoke to the paradox of fame: Once you’re a celebrity, you can never again be the person who created the art that made you one. Five years later, the White Stripes are genuine rock stars touring the far reaches of Canada in an effort to play all the little rooms they can find — elementary school classrooms, hockey rinks, cramped pool halls, Inuit Elder meetings, fishing boats and city buses. For their tenth anniversary show on Sunday in remote harbor town Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, they managed to find one room that was nearly perfect: The Savoy, an intimate theater built in the early 1920s to replicate old Victorian music halls – and which happens to be schemed almost entirely in red, black and white, and (if you believe the locals) haunted by as many ghosts as the band’s music. Both sides of the “White family” were in attendance for the occasion, and eager fans dressed in color-coordinated outfits were rewarded with small cups of champagne by the Stripes road crew pre-show. (For details on the Stripes’ two-hour tour through the best of their catalog and more, read on.) Over two thrilling hours, Jack and Meg laid out their catalog in trash-candy collage form — stitching old riffs into new songs, teasing familiar melodies, improvising verses and balancing nostalgic rarities (“Wasting My Time”) with the majority of its new material. All the songs flowed into one viscerally played stream of consciousness, and as they bled together, the common element between them — White’s encyclopedic command of American musical traditions — became clearer. Ultimately, the only ghosts of the night were the ones White summoned from his influences: Son House (“Death Letter,” “John the Revelator”), Blind Willie Johnson (“Lord, Send Me

Creative Captioning: When Billy Met JackThanks to the American Film Institute's 40th anniversary celebration for bringing together the unlikely pair below. From the balding pates to the black blazers, these two could almost be clones if it weren't for the fact that a true genetic match would have probably resulted in both of these ghosts of Hollywood past being ridiculously talented. In any case, this mismatch makes rich fodder for this week's Creative Captioning exercise in which you tell us what's happening below. The best entry will be elevated to a position of prominence here in the blog and the writer of that entry may call him (or her) self "Official Celebritology Captionologist" for the week of Oct. 1 - 5. C'mon, give it some thought. Submit more than one. All work and no play makes [your name here] a dull boy/girl. (AP)

Nine Inch Nails Wants You! (To Make Its Videos For Free!) [In Production]Pinned to his La-Z-Boy by the money bags recently delivered in the self-distribution triumph that is Nine Inch Nails' latest album Ghosts I-IV -- "800,000 transactions in its first week, totaling $1.6 million in revenues," according to Reuters -- helpless leader Trent Reznor apparently has little to do but watch online video until his bandmates dig him out. There will be no Dakota Fanning ogling for Reznor, however, who's now soliciting movies from fans for the "Ghosts Film Festival":The concept is for you to take whatever tracks you feel inspired by from Ghosts and create what you feel should accompany them visually. You will be able to see all of the submissions, and a team of us (including me) will be sorting through them and setting aside ones we feel are exceptional. Eventually (within a couple of months?) we will present a virtual "film festival" with me and some special guests presenting selections of your work. Don't get your hopes up for prize hardware or other material glory, Reznor adds; the most you can win is some schlubby YouTube love and maybe, if you're lucky, a spot in the backdrop at a one-time-only NIN performance of Ghosts. But the more ambitious among you can always take solace in your role as a grass-roots shill pushing the phenomenon as far into the dyed black as it can go, with only a couple hundred grainy cell-phone movies, some musty, goth-chick nostalgia and Mark Romanek's all-time great "Closer" video standing between you and cinematic immortality. Or you could always, you know, just watchalong with the rest of us. We're just saying. Ghosts Film Festival [Nine Inch Nails]

![Picture: Lindsay Lohan Enlists Fake Firecrotch In Attempt To Hide Rekindled Ronson Love Connection [Diversions]](http://imagecache03.pixsy.com/02182008/55/55c5953f-3be4-45d9-80f8-fbdf879146da.jpg)
Lindsay Lohan Enlists Fake Firecrotch In Attempt To Hide Rekindled Ronson Love Connection [Diversions]Despite the recent appearance of Lindsay Lohan's Sober Face (not to mention her Sober Nipples), there are a few disturbing indications that the Ghosts Of Cokepants Past are re-entering her life. The all-knowing, all-seeing eyes of TMZ caught Lohan enjoying the sabbath with some close friends at Villa last night (we're guessing they weren't watching the NBA All-Star Game). But when it came time to call it an evening, Lindsay's posse pulled a page from the Scooby Doo playbook in an attempt to fool the paparazzi into thinking she had already left the club: namely, they created a diversion. In an attempt to throw the 'razzi off LiLo's potentially booze-soaked scent, her posse sent a Fake Firecrotch out of the club and straight into the big black SUV that first dropped Linds off there. However, much like George Bush, the paparazzi doesn't fool easy; instead of trailing the car containing the Lohan double, they took up camp by LiLo's lesbionic galpal Samantha Ronson's car (who had made a conspicuous yet separate entrance at the club earlier in the evening). Just moments later, they were rewarded for their ingenuity as Lindsay and Sam left the club together and sped away into the night, Benny Mardones style, in Ronson's Porsche. While we don't know where they went, we do know this. Someone should get Baz Luhrman on the phone, for this story of young doomed love will one day surely put Romeo & Juliet's tale to shame. Lohan Thinks She's Smarter Than Everyone [TMZ]
