The White Stripes Discover Small is Beautiful in Nova Scotia “Well, you’re in your little room, and you’re working on something good,” Jack White once sang. “But if it’s really good, you’re gonna need a bigger room.” “Little Room” was just a forty-five-second ditty on 2002’s White Blood Cells, but it also spoke to the paradox of fame: Once you’re a celebrity, you can never again be the person who created the art that made you one. Five years later, the White Stripes are genuine rock stars touring the far reaches of Canada in an effort to play all the little rooms they can find — elementary school classrooms, hockey rinks, cramped pool halls, Inuit Elder meetings, fishing boats and city buses. For their tenth anniversary show on Sunday in remote harbor town Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, they managed to find one room that was nearly perfect: The Savoy, an intimate theater built in the early 1920s to replicate old Victorian music halls – and which happens to be schemed almost entirely in red, black and white, and (if you believe the locals) haunted by as many ghosts as the band’s music. Both sides of the “White family” were in attendance for the occasion, and eager fans dressed in color-coordinated outfits were rewarded with small cups of champagne by the Stripes road crew pre-show. (For details on the Stripes’ two-hour tour through the best of their catalog and more, read on.) Over two thrilling hours, Jack and Meg laid out their catalog in trash-candy collage form — stitching old riffs into new songs, teasing familiar melodies, improvising verses and balancing nostalgic rarities (“Wasting My Time”) with the majority of its new material. All the songs flowed into one viscerally played stream of consciousness, and as they bled together, the common element between them — White’s encyclopedic command of American musical traditions — became clearer. Ultimately, the only ghosts of the night were the ones White summoned from his influences: Son House (“Death Letter,” “John the Revelator”), Blind Willie Johnson (“Lord, Send Me

Britney’s dad runs up HUGE legal billIf you’re currently worrying about what the financial climate means for your career, you might want to retrain as a lawyer and hotfoot it (or hotfly it – it’s quicker) to Los Angeles – it seems the Spears family are collecting laywers. New court papers have been released, revealing that, in just over a year as her conservator, Britney’s dad Jamie has spent almost £2million of his daughter’s money by using at least 17 different legal firms to get her life sorted out. In fact, the situation has become so extreme that at a recent court hearing, six different lawyers turned up, causing an opposing attorney to sarcastically enquire, “Which one of you am I supposed to talk to?” However, apparently they are all necessary given the various legal wranglings in Britney’s life – custody arrangements, restraining orders, driving penalties, property disputes, crimes against fashion, etc. However, there’s concern that Britney is being bled dry – although, given how much tickets to her concerts cost, we don’t think she’ll be doing her shopping at Poundland any time soon…

Backstreet Boys’ Nick Carter: The Six-Pack Q&A We’ll resist the temptation to use the “Backstreet’s Back” headline that’s popping up all over in response to the news that the Backstreet Boys‘ album Unbreakable debuted at number seven on the charts today. In honor of the new release, we posed six questions to former Paris Hilton guy-pal, reality-TV star and Dolphin ambassador Nick Carter. He admitted to some mild hotel-room destruction and revealed he’s a Smashing Pumpkins fan. What’s the most rock-star thing you’ve ever done? “I remember I was having this party in my hotel room and it required me to have candles laying all over the place. And I had them all in a circle in this room and I didn’t realize, ‘Oh that’s right, these candles bleed.’ So they bled into the carpet and then they bled into the TV and I caused like $5,000 damage in this one hotel and they still won’t let me go there to this day.” What was your favorite album when you were fourteen? “I used to love E 1999 Eternal by Bone Thugs-N-Harmony.” Do you regret doing your reality show, House of Carters? “No, because it helped me realize that I had some problems and I needed to fix them — personally, mentally and physically.” What’s on your current playlist? “I listen to a mixture of stuff. I’ve got the new Smashing Pumpkins album which I’m in love with. I think it’s the most amazing thing. Also, Lloyd. I also like our album [laughs].” When do you think you’ll know it’s time to retire? “I think that’s a personal opinion. As long as you’re having fun and still doing stuff, it doesn’t matter what other people think.” Who’s the coolest person you’ve ever met? “I just don’t ever look at people that way. With everybody that I’ve met, there’s always been something I’ve learned about them that I like. You just need to look at everybody and realize that everybody has some good in them. I never really am in awe of people because we are just equal at the end of the day.”

Professional Diss Fest, Courtesy the TwitteratiJoel Madden slammed Kesha's "jacked" sounding single; a Wired editor said Roger Ebert's copy was sloppy; and David Carr doth protested about his diss too much. The Twitterati bled their rivals. If Wired's Joe Brown did want to be a bitch about it, what word, worse than "appalled," would he have have used to describe Roger Ebert's typos? Just ascking (ahem). Joel Madden will buy fellow singer Kesha's forthcoming album, so don't get all upset. He just wanted everyone to know it will probably be te
