"We Are the Night" by The Chemical BrothersAlthough they've never stopped evolving as artists, The Chemical Brothers will always be associated with that brief moment in the late '90s when the entire record industry was convinced that electronica was about to overtake the American pop market. That never came to pass, but the duo nevertheless managed to score a few crossover hits, and have been coasting along on that initial wave of goodwill ever since. Their latest album, We Are the Night, recycles several samples that the team has used in the past—most obviously, they sample their own "Sunshine Underground" on the title track—but the record still manages to sound like the freshest thing they've produced thus far in the 21st century. The songs mainly stay within the Brothers' established psychedelic-electro style, but the arrangements are considerably less dense than their previous efforts, lending the material an ethereal late-night quality. The two are at their best when they balance their DJ instincts

My Chemical Romance Shine Some Darkness in Tempe for Tour Opener For a complete gallery of photos from this show, click here. Normally a preppy college town baked in desert heat, Tempe, Arizona was bathed in darkness Friday night thanks to the black-clad denizens who descended upon Tempe Beach Park for My Chemical Romance’s tour kickoff. The band eschewed their black-and-white Black Parade uniforms for casual street clothing and tore through a ninety-minute set that focused primarily on 2006’s The Black Parade. However, the New Jersey-based band, playing as part of the two-day Circle K Tempe Music Festival, went back to their 2004 breathrough album Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge for its opening and closing numbers: impassioned versions of breakout hits “I’m Not Okay (I Promise)” and “Helena,” respectively. Frontman Gerard Way gains a little more confidence with each passing tour, and for this show he channeled the spirit of Mick Jagger: shimmying across the stage, stopping to wiggle his hips on a catwalk that projected into the mosh pit. During “This Is How I Disappear,” his bassist brother Mikey Way (wearing a fantastic T-shirt that announced, “Mikey Fuckin Way”) violently shook his head as Gerard encouraged the audience to raise their right hands. “Thanks for coming out to the fucking rock show,” Gerard said while introducing “Dead!” “Are you all ready to die?” Luckily, nobody bit the dust before the band closed the show in mid-tour form. The group that began in garages in New Jersey has graduated to one of the top arena acts in the country, and its members wear it awfully well. The kids, as they say, are all right. Beck’s “Odelay” Goes Deluxe, Lily Allen and Jamie Lynn Spears Announce Pregnancies, The Band and Burt Bacharach Score Lifetime Achievement Grammys and More On January 29th, Beck will release a double-disc deluxe version of his 1996 album Odelay that includes sixteen B-sides and compilation tracks that haven’t seen U.S. release before, as well as two never-before-released songs from the album’s original sessions produced by the Dust Brothers: “Inferno” and “Gold Chains.” The second disc also includes remixes by Aphex Twin, Mario Caldato Jr. and U.N.K.L.E., plus “Burro,” a Spanish-language rendition of “Jackass” recorded with a mariachi band. Lily Allen and her boyfriend, Chemical Brothers’ Ed Simons, have confirmed they are expecting their first child. Allen’s rep told Us Weekly, “As the pregnancy is at such an early stage, the couple will be making no further comment, but they are obviously thrilled by the news,” and added that Allen’s follow-up to this year’s Alright, Still, “will be released as planned next year.” ‘Tis the season for pregnancy announcements: Sixteen-year-old Jamie Lynn Spears, Britney’s little sis and star of Nickelodeon’s Zoey 101, is reportedly expecting her first child with boyfriend Casey Aldridge. In a statement, Nickelodeon said, “We respect Jamie Lynn’s decision to take responsibility in this sensitive and personal situation.” After the news became public, the Christian publisher planning to release a parenting-themed title penned by mom Lynne Spears next year said the book is “delayed indefinitely … delayed, not canceled.” But at least one person doesn’t think the baby news is true: Britney told paparazzi, “My sister’s not pregnant!” while out shopping last night. Metallica are adding more international festival dates to their early summer itinerary, fueling speculation that the follow-up to 2003’s St. Anger will be released around then. The band has scheduled dates in Poland and the Netherlands at th
