Carbon/Silicon’s Mick Jones and Tony James Talk Ferris Bueller, Fascism; Plus Watch Three Live Songs “The great thing about the Internet is they don’t know we’re really old,” joked Mick Jones, hanging backstage before a recent gig with his latest band, the file-sharing-friendly Carbon/Silicon. Click above to watch the onetime Clash guitarist and his Carbon/Silicon bandmate Tony James (formerly of Generation X) quote Ferris Bueller, explain how they’ve made it in the business for so long (”keep taking your medication”) and discuss how the spirit of Seventies punk lives on today. “Music is a great way of raising debate,” Jones says. “[Kids today] look back at the cool days, and some of those cool things were really good, like stand up against fascism.” Plus, here are three live performances from the Carbon/Silicon show at New York’s Highline Ballroom: “War on Culture,” “The Magic Suitcase” and “I Loved You.”

On the Charts: Metallica Dominate, Jessica Simpson Debuts StrongPhoto: Getty The Big News: Metallica only needed four days to storm to the top of the charts, as the current cover boys sold 490,000 copies since its Friday release. While the shortened week prevented the band from setting a personal one-week sales record, they did manage to sell 400,000 more copies than the number two record, Young Jeezy’s The Recession. Kid Rock’s Rock N’ Roll Jesus stayed embedded at three, while Jessica Simpson’s country music crossover Do You Know scored fourth with 65,000 copies sold. Slipknot’s All Hope Is Gone rounded out our top five. Debuts: LL Cool J’s Exit 13 led the second wave of debuts, coming in at nine with 44,000 copies, or a third of the copies LL’s Todd Smith sold in its first week in 2006. Supertramp-samplers Gym Class Heroes only managed to muster the 14 spot with their new album The Quilt. Comedian Mitch Hedburg’s posthumous Do You Believe In Gosh? charted at 18, Kardinal Offishall’s Not 4 Sale claimed 40 and Okkervil River’s The Stand-Ins placed at 42. Last Week’s Heroes: Outside of the debuts, this week’s top ten shared a striking resemblance with last week’s with one notable exception: Lil Wayne cashed in on his VMA and SNL performances as Tha Carter III bumped up from 10 to eight thanks to a 2% sales increase. The biggest loser had to be the New Kids on the Block, as their The Block spiraled from two down to 16 thanks to a 72% sales decrease. Arcade Fire, Spoon Nab Plug Nominations, Lupe Fiasco Raps as a Cheeseburger on Concept LP, Slash Plays “Sweet Child” for First Time in Decade The Plug Awards, indie rock’s Grammys, will take place on March 6th, 2008, at New York’s Terminal Five. Battles and Of Montreal lead nominations with six apiece, including the much-coveted Album of the Year. Arcade Fire and Justice each nabbed five nods, and Band of Horses, the National, Panda Bear, Spoon and (kind of unfairly) Radiohead are also up for various awards. The My Bloody Valentine reunion machine is working double time, with the long-dormant band already announcing a trio of concert dates in the U.K. for June/July 2008. For those already checking if JetBlue flies to Heathrow Airport, MBV is also in talks to play next year’s Coachella. Lupe Fiasco will tackle the concept album on his second full-length, December 18th’s The Cool. The album will feature songs from the perspective of multiple characters (including a cheeseburger on “Gotta Eat”) that focus on the darker side of urban living. Snoop Dogg and Fall Out Boy’s Patrick Stump guest. The Game has redacted his crazy courthouse claims that he’d be willing to babysit Britney Spears‘ kids in exchange for some Brit lovin’. Now, The Game has issued new crazy courthouse claims stating he’s no longer infatuated with the pop star. Although our list of demands for this year’s Rock & Roll Fantasy Camp went unfulfilled, Slash did use the occasion to play “Sweet Child O’ Mine” for the first time in over a decade. Slash described the moment as “very surreal.” We describe the moment as almost worth the camp’s $9,499 tuition.

Baby #2 for Dave GrohlFoo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl and his wife, Jordyn, are going to be parents for a second time! Their first child, daughter Violet, was born in 2006. Congrats! Wouldn't it be cool if the Grohl kids teamed up with the Rossdale-Stefani boys to form a rock band (assuming they'll follow in the footsteps of their parents!)? [Image via WENN.]

stardust kids - mashup!† FROM DJ PAUL V.I'm always thrilled to find mashups that connect the past to the present. Newcomers MGMT made one of my favorite discs of 2008, and David Bowie, well - he's made many genius albums and certainly influenced MGMT (hell, who hasn't been influenced by Bowie?) Anyway, DJBC and my club Bootie buddies A+D came up with a super cool concept: to mash up Bowie's all-time classic disc, "The Rise & Fall Of Ziggy Stardust," and they enlisted some of the top bootleggers to create Ziggy Remixed. The results are fierce and fabulously glam-tastic, sure to give you a spiders from Mars tingle up your spine! Here's their mash of "Lady Stardust" vs. "Kids" † Listen to Stardust Kids [.mp3 5.7mb] † Enjoy - DJ Paul V. The Smash Mix | Indie 103.1FM | Bootie LA | Dragstrip 66 PS to my LA peeps: Bootie LA is happening this Saturday night at The Echoplex. I'm spinning with A+D, and we've got the return of Smash-Up Derby - the world's first live, all-mashup band - playing at 11pm. They'll rock you, and we'll mash you on the dance floor!

5 Reasons To Worry About Taylor MomsenSixteen-year-old Taylor Momsen landed the September cover of Teen Vogue, and in an interview, the actress known as Gossip Girl's Little J says some things that have us wondering if she's going to turn out okay. Some teen stars grow up unscathed by their lifestyle; others have meltdowns, drug/alcohol problems and blame the black kid when caught driving like a crazy person through Hollywood. Is Taylor the latter or the former? It's cool that she has her own band, Pretty Reckless, but is it all too

david gest - oddball music video star!hey kids! here's a bizarre item for the evening - remember david gest? gosh - how could anyone forget him - the eccentric producer & promoter who was once married to my dear liza minnelli (that rocky marriage didn't last very long...) apparently he's more famous over in the UK and during a flight to scotland he met the manager of glasgow based band attic lights and struck up a friendship which led to mr. gest starring in the band's new video for their single bring you down (available for purchase here) i actually like the track a lot but the video is super wacky featuring a bunch of little people following david around (known as little people of davidland) along with three asian girls nicknamed the chinese girls with herpes - go on and witness the madness for yourself below! many thanks to paul for sending me the heads up on all of this! popbytes over & out for now...xxoo Attic Lights & David Gest The Full Story It all started on a flight to Scotland. Within hours of a chance meeting between David Gest and the manager of Glasgow's Attic Lights, TV legend Gest was holed-up in the band's home town studio recording a memorable monologue he wrote in 10 minutes over their forthcoming single Bring You Down. Released on July 21st 2008 through Island Records, the single will be accompanied by a rather outlandish and decadent video featuring Kev from the Attic Lights, David Gest and his entourage of the Little People Of Davidland and the Chinese Girls With Herpes. Also making an appearance is a guzzerling alcoholic named Alke Hall who likes to bring her men down and a nutty hotel clerk named Prunetta Pitts (whose mother loved prunes!). Kevin Sherry the lead singer of the Attic Lights said, "We are thrilled to be working with David Gest. He is a true television legend and he is great fun. He also produced the highest rated musical special in television history 'Michael Jackson: 30th Anniversary Celebration' - which is cool." The video was shot in the luxurious surroundi

Summer Movie Fare, Hipster Style [Hipster Parenthood]If you were wondering what a family-filled movie event in the park would look like if you were an East Side hipster, here's your answer. The Downtown Film Festival presents Your Name Here, a rock musical and mockumentary for the whole family, as part of their "Summer Screening Mixers." In this version, there will be both non-alcoholic and alcoholic drinks available for the attendees who come early to the party for the "mixer" portion of the evening. Can't imagine this would be approved in Mayberry, USA, but then again, their movie screenings aren't held in the courtyard of the Barker Block live-work lofts in Downtown LA. Your Name Here is a coming of age story (what else?) about a teenage band and their parents who are trying to manage them: the film was partially based on director Tamar Halpern's own family. Some familiar alt-geek tropes are explored: There's a punk rock cool chick bass player—shades of Mary Stuart Masterson in Some Kind of Wonderful, anyone? But there's also a few new ones, like a "narcissistic egg player" (????) and a British kid no one can understand. The original music is written and performed by the kids in the flick. Get there early (7:30) for your beverage of choice and get a spot on the lawn. The actual screening starts 8:30. RSVP to summer@dffla.com. The Downtown Film Festival

LISTEN UP: iPhone Might Be Too Cool to Hang Out With MeApple's iPhone apparently has some good taste in music, sporting the likes of Beck, Lily Allen, Feist, and Nine Inch Nails, among others, in its newest commercial. I wonder if it'll also have my iPod's bizarre sense of humor and go out of its way to play the same three Dinosaur Jr. songs every time I put it on shuffle. (Music For Kids Who Don't Read Good) Extrawack! has an interview with Vince DiFiore, the trumpet player from Cake, along with an mp3 of the band covering Black Sabbath's "War Pigs." Next up on their series of exclusive interviews: the dude from Mighty Mighty Bosstones who only dances. The weather forecast for the East Coast is looking awfully Nico-ey for the next couple days. Prepare your tunes accordingly. (Art Decade) I think listening to The Pipettes and Smoosh back to back might be intensely sugary enough to actually give someone diabetes. In a good way, of course. (Information Leafblower) Finally, Pittsburgh's own Gregg Gillis - aka Girl Talk - throws down this ridiculous remix of a Tokyo Police Club song. I haven't been this proud of a band from my hometown since Rusted Root did that Peter Bjorn & John remix. Man, now I'm kind of wishing that were real. (I Guess I'm Floating)
