The Cross Movement

Disco de The Cross Movement: “Holy Culture”

Disco de The Cross Movement: “Holy Culture”
Descripción (en inglés) :
The Cross Movement: Phanatik, The Tonic, Tru-Life, The Ambassador.
Producers include: Kevin Arthur, Lee Jerkins, DJ Official, The Tonic, Virgil Byrd.
While the gospel/worship music scene has seen its fair share of crossover artists, few of these have attempted to set their Christian message to a hip-hop beat. Even fewer have successfully rapped about Christianity (visions of THE SIMPSONS' Ned Flanders engaging in a vain attempt at some street cred come to mind). But on HOLY CULTURE, their fourth CD, self-styled Philadelphia "rescue squad" The Cross Movement accomplish what had previously seemed an impossible feat--Christian rap music that contains imagination, vitality, and street smarts, with echoes of both the Old Testament and the Last Poets.
The Movement weaves a sonic tapestry in which street politics, social mores, and religion are inextricably intertwined, a worldview best typified in the anthemic "Cry No More" and the self-descriptive, Middle Eastern-inflected "When I Flow (It's Gospel)." Intriguing production flourishes abound, not only serving to frame the collective's religious message in a contemporary framework, but also underlining their artistic and musical flow. Though HOLY CULTURE's overt religiosity won't be setting the clubs on fire anytime soon, there is much for even the most die-hard hip-hop enthusiast to admire here.

- Hip Hop can be a "Holy Culture"

Oh..my...GOD! This CD is off the chain! Cross Movement definitely represents Christian living in a culture dominated by hip hop (and some said it wouldn't last). Rap music (not hip hop) dominates the charts today, but relies on danceable sounds, excessive talk of material, and misuse of women to sell albums. "Holy Culture" proves you can live "in" this world but not be "of" this world, i.e., maintain a life in Christ while not getting caught into the trappings of this world.

I've been a CM fan since the beginning and I can attest that though they're beats have gotten better and have grown to rival "commercial" hip hop artists, their message has remained the same - JESUS (they even say so on a song off of their "House of Representatives" album). Some may think them to be preachy, but they break their messages down in "bite size pieces" so all can comprehend.

Even though all the songs are tight on their own merit, the ones that stand out are:

"Holy Culture" - This song is the opener and pretty much sums up the whole disc. It's spoken almost in prose - spoken word - format. Real tight.

"In Not Of" - Would would Jesus say if he rocked Tims and Girbauds...? CM lets 'em know!

"Cry No More" - This song was on one of the Left Behind movies. Nice straight forward song offering hope to those facing crises in their life.

"Rise Up" - The beat is HOT! The message - HOTTER!

"Closer To You" - Imagine God telling you he's trying to get your attention and wants to be your #1 love. This is one of the songs he would sing. This song struck a nerve with me.

"Eternal Cypha" - Definitely the "posse cut" of the year, without the cursing and shout-outs. The CM share the mic with some up-and-coming artists who seem to be able to hold their own over a tight beat.

To get a true understading of The Cross movement, I strongly recommend: Heaven's Mentality, House of Representatives, Human Emergency and the Ambassador's Christology: In Laymens Terms (another 5-star album).

It's good to know men of God can stand for what they believe and offer no apologies. Keep up the good work brothas! I'm a fan for (eternal) life!

- A Precedence has been established!!!

Another job well done by the CM crew. CM continues to bring the Word like no other by using the medium of rap to deliver message of Christ and holiness. I've tried to listen to other Christian Rap artist, even made mistakes by buying other artist, but I find myself being entertained and not ministered to. I have several of the CM's works and there is no doubt in who and what they believe (the lyrics come directly from the Word of God). CM continues to reaffirm how good God is by using them to minister to other catagory of listeners without holding back the truth of Christ and Holiness. A must buy. Be blessed and Stay Encouraged.

- AMAZING!!

These dudes keep it hot with every release. This is THE cd that finally made me see that Gospel Rap can sound better than Non-Gospel Rap. This Dudes Can Actually Rhyme, the production is Outstanding. I was like "What?" Their content is also very Christian! Many so-called Christian Rappers out there compromise their message to the point that you can't tell it's Christian anymore. Not The Case Here! Somehow, they manage to make scripture sound cool. Don't know how they do it man! Talented group of guys here. You will hear the name Jesus, You will Hear scripture, you will love it! Definitely worth the purchase.

- One Wonderful CD!

I have to admit this is one of the few CD's I could label as the finest! Everything about the CD rocks! Oops, Bounces! Not only are the beats great, but the lyrics are all well-thought out and very uplifting! Uh, yeah, bad review but it's a great CD- You will not regret buying it!

- To know the Culture is to Love HIM

This was the first group to really get me away from secular rap. With tight beats and Biblicly correct lyrics the Cross Movement is truly one of the best Christian rap groups; scratch that they are the best rap group Christian or secular I've heard. If you do not own an Cross Movement cd then I would suggest that you get one so you can truely be blessed. It changed my view I know it will change yours too. Get it!!!! One love One God
