- A Must Have for Doobie Purists Like Me!

I first bought the CD then the video of this concert. Here are some of the finest, most polished musicians you will ever see, playing their signature blend of rock, country, jazz and blues. The CD was great, but it is awesome to actually watch the skill of these guys with their instruments. With all due respect to my favorite band members and Doobie originators Pat Simmons (the heart and spokesperson for the band), and Tom Johnston (the voice and hard edge rocker) and the rest of these talented guys -- the real treat is watching the absolute precision of the quietly reserved John McFee (who fronts with Simmons and Johnston)on electric, classical and steel guitars, as well as violin. He is incredible, and Simmons and Johnston allow McFee plenty of showcasing. Also, the Doobie's tradition of dual drummers provides the driving beat of the music, adding to their reputation as masters of clean sound. The CD has about 5 more songs than the VHS, and the songs are in a slightly different order, but the trade off is the visuals. On the VHS, the 3 Michael McDonald tunes come half way thru in a cutaway to another, larger concert. The tunes are excellent, but the McDonald-period of the Doobies has never been for me. Give me the soul of 'Toulouse Street' over the falsetto 'What a Fool Believes' any day. Now the drawbacks, but DON'T let them hamper you from buying the VHS. You can live with it, folks: The Doobies are a California band, and this show was taped live in front of a super Elmer Fuddy-Duddy "Noo Yawk" audience at Sony Studios in Manhatten, who would obviously be much more at home watching Billy Joel croon "Don't go changing..." for the umpteenth time. Many look like they just stopped in after a long day on Wall Street, and appear to have trouble letting their hair down for an evening of Doobie-style rock and roll. For this I fault the producers, who probably papered the audience for this performance with upper-scale Yuppie types -- God only knows why. A truly embarrassing moment for the band occurs when Simmons introduces a number "from an album we made called 'The Captain and Me.'" He is met with a gigantic wall of deafening dead silence, to which he finally replys, "And .... I guess you don't remember that one." Later, we're subjected to a pair of vintage Easty-Coasty Rosanne Roseanna-Danna look-alikes who get up and dance directly in front of the band and will not sit down (while the rest of the audience just sits there). EEeeewwww! Thankfully, the camera operator stays away from them pretty much. Sorry, but a California audience would have been much more appreciative and deserving as witnesses of this historic taping of one of America's finest and most talented rock and roll bands. (Let the Manhattanites bathe in Sinatra and Jerry Vale. The Doobies belong to California, baby.) Overall: a truly first-class performance that you will cherish and watch time and time again. Well worth owning, especially at the excellent price on the CD and the VHS offered through Amazon.com. Highly recommend you get both, like I did! And to the Doobies I say, "Rock and Roll, dudes!"

- It's Got What You Want....

I sometimes marvel at reviews that Amazon buyers leave here! Who cares about the audience? Now I'll give you the truth, this is a great show! The band offers up a well organized song list from their many years. They include Michael McDonald who was "Down The Highway" in Nashville. They cover enough material well, to let any Doobie fan feel like they got what they paid for.

If you know who they are but are not a REAL fan, than pass this offering up. If you are a fan... BUY IT, You'll like it. 'Nuff said!

- Doobies Rock All Night Long!!

I picked up this DVD last week and it has quickly become one of my all time favourites. Right from the start the Doobies are into their thing. The venue is done in front of a small audience and its obvious the band enjoyed a more intimate setup. I personally liked the original Doobies so I was thrilled to see that Johnson and Simmons do most of the singing. The live versions of South City Midnight Lady and Jesus

is Just Alright are electrifying and you will find yourself wanting more. So kick the kids outta the house and crank it...and

let the good times roll!!

- Great!

Not much to add to the other glowing reviews. The sound is so much better than the CD and it's not even DTS! I would have loved to be at this show. Now with the wonder of technology I am whenever I wish. A fine example of when it's done right.
