FIERY FURNACES HEAT UP '70SWHEN a band claims to have made a '70s-sounding record, it's generally understood that it's going to be influenced by the biggest acts of the era, from ABBA to Led Zeppelin. But for the esoteric, avant-garde brother-sister act known as the Fiery...

"Widow City" by The Fiery FurnacesAfter spending the past two years recording albums and performing concerts that pushed their brand of narrative story-songs in directions that were often too off-putting for casual listeners, The Fiery Furnaces's sixth record, Widow City, finds the sibling duo streamlining their style into something less cluttered and more instantly appealing. Though the album has its share of odd twists, turns and tangents, the tunes are looser and more groove-based, resulting in a set of songs that allow their dense, wordy lyrics enough space in the arrangements to resonate properly. Per usual, the Furnaces' music is dominated by keyboards and guitars, but the driving force of the album lies in its surprisingly fluid bass lines, whether it's the bottom-heavy Led Zeppelin riffing of the epic "Navy Nurse," the mystic noodling of "Duplexes of the Dead" or the airy funk of "The Old Hag Is Sleeping." Singer Eleanor Friedberger remains one of the most singular and charismatic

LISTEN UP: These Indie Kids Nowadays, Con Sarnit!Indiecredential offers a genuinely heartfelt, touching homage to the greatness of the Leeds Music Festival before indie disenchantment sucked out our ability to just have fun experiencing new music. 7.1. Speaking of indie disenchantment (or the reverse thereof), a music blogger ripping a Fiery Furnaces live show? Wowee! That's like Eleanor Friedberger's grandmother ripping a Fiery Furnaces live show. Fluxblog makes a strong case, including examples of older, better FF mp3s. Hero Hill has some more tracks off the new New Pornographers album. Apparently, the album will consist primarily of upbeat, catchy pop tunes, and not, as I'd predicted last month, 38 one-minute tracks of 80s straightedge hardcore. The Kinks' "Drivin'", Big Star's "Big Black Car", and a two-mile long blog post about cars, the same day I find out that fixing my '96 Jeep is going to cost me trillion dollars? Not cool, karma. (Locust St.) Sayng "I forgot the Arctic Monkeys existed" is no longer a joke, I really did forget the Arctic Monkeys existed. (Scatter O' Light)

Finally, It's Inflatable Alligator Season [To Do] newVideoPlayer("todoswim_def.flv", 506, 423,""); If you woke up this morning and noticed that something in the air seemed, well, different, your senses were not deceiving you. As the final days of May trickle to a close, that can only mean one thing — it's time to hit the beach! For those of you who haven't been swimming in the Pacific yet this year, might we suggest bringing an inflatable alligator to the beach with you this weekend? After all, nothing puts a damper on a lovely day at the beach like getting caught in a riptide and ending up marooned on Santa Catalina Island (especially if a burst of negatively charged exotic manner ends up making said island up and disappear!). Whether you end up at the beach or not, Molls McAleer is here to guide you on your journey of all the fun that can be had in Los Angeles this weekend. Enjoy! FRIDAY, MAY 30 · Beirut at the Wiltern. · Flight of the Concords at the Orpheum. · Iron Maiden at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater. SATURDAY, MAY 31 · The Cure at the Hollywood Bowl. · The Fiery Furnaces at Spaceland. · Janeane Garofalo at UCB. SUNDAY, JUNE 1 · The Cool Kids at the Key Club. · Six Chicks and a Chair at the Improv. · Improv Festival at IO West.
