When, in 1975 it was decided to reform The Flying Burrito Brothers after a two-year hiatus, original members Sneeky Pete (steel) and Chris Ethridge (bass) knew that they should have some big names along for the ride. So in came ex-Byrds drummer and singer Gene Parsons, ex- Canned Heat singer and guitarist Joel Scott Hill and ex-Swampwater fiddler and singer Gib Guilbeau. The result was "Flying Again", a remarkable country-rock effort with the original spirit intact. (Much more so than the previous Rick Roberts-led lineups which toured Europe from 1971- 1973). The band clicked and the material they came up with-half originals, half covers- more than suited the Burritos. 'Wind And Rain' is a special standout, as is 'Sweet Desert Childhood' and 'River Road.' The covers are full of life as well, and 'Dim Lights, Thick Smoke', and the excellent 'Easy To Get On' in particular work wonderfully. The single was 'Building Fires', an ok song that really hasn't aged well. All in all, "Flying Again" is an extremely important chapter in The Flying Burrito Brothers' long history. Not their best by any means-the Beland era was still four years away- but well worth seeking out.
