Lunchtime Poll: Save “Sgt. Pepper’s” From Razorlight The NME is reporting that a collection of worthy (Oasis, the Killers, the Fratellis) and not so worthy (Razorlight, Travis) bands are covering a collection of songs off Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, in honor of the 40th Anniversary of the album’s release (it came out June 1st, 1967). We can already hear the maudlin wail of Travis butchering “Lucy in the Sky” and we feel something must be done. You are in charge of this project. You get to pick any band currently together and actively playing to join your team and take to the task of not fucking up cover versions of these classic tunes. What bands do you select and which songs do they play?

M.I.A., Against Me!, Ted Leo Kick Off Day One at Lollapalooza Cloudless skies, hot sun and an intermittent cooling Lake Michigan breeze greeted fans Friday at Lollapalooza, held for the third straight year in Chicago’s beautiful albeit sprawling Grant Park. The Fratellis proved that even Scottish hipsters can rise early, yet singer-guitarist John Lawler apologized for his tiredness. A relatively early 11:45 AM start time may have helped explain his sluggishness, and the group’s mumbled, indecipherable banter. Nonetheless, the trio shook hips with jagged power-pop and strolling Britpop. Sure, the rise-and-retreat shiftiness often recalled the White Stripes, yet the melodic catchiness of bouncy songs such as “Chelsea Dagger” went down smoothly — the perfect morning tonic for a long day ahead. Ted Leo could care less about such restraint. The mod punk had politics on the brain and conservative values in his sights during his early afternoon set. After a sloppy beginning that witnessed him slip and fall, Leo led his Pharmacists quartet through an urgent set marred only by a handful of ill-advised reggae flirtations. While well-intentioned, the agit frontman isn’t as effective when playing at half-speed. Fortunately, open-mouth screams and calls to action dominated. “Do you believe in something beautiful?” Leo asked the audience, and the crowd answered in the affirmative by clapping along enthusiastically. “A Bottle of Buckie” found Leo in a reflective mood, “Bomb Repeat Bomb” bristled, and “C.I.A.” brought the forty-five-minute performance to a close, Leo busy hammering the bottom of his guitar against the stage floor. Transitioning from the excitable to the fruity, the Polyphonic Spree came across like the Partridge Family on steroids. Tim DeLaughter’s massive crew has traded in their white ropes for all-black outfits, but the music was anything but gloomy. Harpsichords, woodwinds, horns and a six-piece choir made for quite the spectacle, even on the large Lollapalooza stage. DeLaughter jumped about and even left the stage to s

Afternoon News: Avril Lavigne, Rolling Stone on TV, Britney Spears and More So yeah, Avril Lavigne’s Best Damn Thing is still on top of the charts. She sold 121,630 copies of the record this week, down 58 percent from last week’s sales but still good enough to put her ahead of Joe’s Aint Nothing Like Me (which sold 98,090 copies) and Nine Inch Nails’ Year Zero, which sold 57,666 copies. This evening, on your local PBS affiliate station, you can watch Rolling Stone founder Jann Wenner be interviewed by Charlie Rose. Tune in. Check out Us Weekly’s play-by-play account of Britney’s surprise performance last night in San Diego. It’s worth marveling at the fact that she actually went through with it. Panic! At the Disco have aped much of their performance style from the Smashing Pumpkins circa Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, so we guess it makes sense that the cabaret emo boys will be contributing to a forthcoming Pumpkins tribute record. Details re: the album are currently sketchy but it seems My Chemical Romance will also be participating in the project, which will be released by Myspace Records. Check out the cover art for the Beastie Boys new album The Mix Up. We wonder what it would have looked like if the record was called “Thick Like Beyonce’s Legs” as originally planned. This time the Fratellis are too exhausted to continue rocking. The band has apparently cancelled the remainder of their scheduled U.S. shows because they are “knackered.” This = not very punk rock.

Prepare for Pumpkins in 2007, Spector on TV and Slint in the Studio? The reunited Smashing Pumpkins (or Corgan and Chamberlin & Friends) have announced their first North American concert. The Phil Spector murder trial is expected to start April 30th. It will be televised, allowing the nation to marvel at both Phil’s Wall of Sound and his hair. The Fratellis threaten to “shake up the music industry” with the release of their new single on USB drive format. Be afraid, music industry, be very afraid. This is apparently going to be a rough week for Joss Stone. Early ‘90s post-rockers Slint are reforming to perform their epic Spiderland live in its entirety. But will they record their first new material since 1991? The lead singer of The Walkmen was reportedly arrested last Thursday at SXSW, the result of “drinking a lot.” He should’ve waited until the much-more appropriate St. Patrick’s Day to get drunk and disorderly. At the strange collaboration department, Bright Eyes wants ?uestlove to drum for him. Wait, strange collaboration dept., don’t close your doors yet. Ryan Adams will appear on the next Minnie Driver album. Up-and-coming country singer Buck Jones was killed when he was struck by a drunk driver in Texas.

Eddie Van Halen Out of Rehab, Morrissey Ready to Pick Hall of Fame Fight and More Remember what Eddie Van Halen looked like before he headed off to rehab? This is him now. What a difference a month-plus and several hundred dollars of highlights can make. Rock on Eddie. LIFEbeat, a U.S. charity dedicated to educating young people about HIV/AIDS prevention, is organizing a series of after-party shows and other performances by artists, the proceeds from which (tickets are $10) will go to fund the charity’s work. The artists involved include the Fratellis, the Hold Steady, Third Eye Blind, Duncan Sheik and Lesley Gore. Damon Albarn said there will be no more Gorillaz records. “We’re trying to make a film next, starting in September hopefully. It will be a film score,” the rocker said of the band’s next project. “There won’t be another pop record.” Morrissey is already planning to snub his potential nomination to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame next year. The notoriously particular rock and pop cultural visionary is - along with the rest of the Smiths - reportedly on the short list of possible inductees, but the Mozzer has said he won’t attend the ceremony because of his ongoing issues with drummer Mike Joyce. “Morrissey has never forgiven Joyce and if organizers think he’s going to bury the hatchet by joining him to accept this award, they’ve got another thing coming. The only way he could be persuaded to turn up would be if Joyce decides not to attend,” a source explained. Check out new Bob Dylan North American tour dates. The whole list is after the jump. Interpol may or may not be releasing their forthcoming new album on July 10th. (Or is it October 7th?)
