Creation Records Founder McGee Tells Bands to “Do It Yourself” Alan McGee, the former head of Creation Records who is credited with discovering artists like Oasis and the Libertines, spoke out against record labels in an interview with XFM. McGee urged new bands not to sign with labels, saying “I’d recommend a band not to go to any record label, I think they’re all fucking rubbish. You’re better off doing it yourself. They’re living in the past.” McGee apparently practices what he preaches, as Poptones Records, the company he founded following the demise of Creation, has pretty much ceased to exist as the music industry continues to tilt digitally. Poptones was responsible for bringing the Hives to the U.K. and released side projects of bands like the Beta Band and the Icarus Line. The label’s website went offline this past May.

R. Kelly Trial Controversy Begins, Panic! at the Disco Go Simple, Courtney Love Faces Off With Lily Allen in MySpaceland The girl that allegedly appears in the infamous R. Kelly sex tape will testify on behalf of R. Kelly when his trial begins September 17th. The girl, whose name is still being withheld even though she’s a young woman now, will tell the court that she is not the person in the blurry tape. The prosecution has lined up testimony from family, friends, family friends, and family of the friends that will say under oath that it is in fact the nameless young woman in the video, who was only fourteen at the time. Panic! at the Disco are stressing simplicity on their new album, which will hopefully result in shorter song titles. John Mellencamp, Kelly Clarkson and Faith Hill will help kick off the NFL season by performing before the Colts/Saints game in Indianapolis on September 6th. The Hives have named their new album The Black And White Album, but they still haven’t named a release date. We’re already calling this disc The Oreo Album. After Lily Allen dissed Courtney Love on her MySpace blog and blamed it on hackers, Courtney Love got her revenge by dissing Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon.

Arcade Fire and LCD Soundsystem Extend Tour, Guns N’ Roses Reunite (Maybe, and Without Axl), The Shins Turn You On The colossal tour featuring The Arcade Fire and LCD Soundsystem will thankfully grace cities other than Louisville and St. Paul, as more dates have been added. The first addition: An October 6th show on NYC’s Randall’s Island. According to former member Steven Adler, at least 80% of the original Guns N’ Roses lineup will reconvene at the Key Club in L.A. to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Appetite for Destruction. This makes two more members than first announced. The missing one-fifth, Axl Rose, is on the guest list, but unlikely to show up. Rihanna, fresh off of breaking UK chart records with “Umbrella,” is getting all synergistic by releasing her own line of umbrellas. The Shins’ “Turn On Me” single, out September 3rd, will sport a cover of Pink Floyd’s “Breathe,” as well as their contribution to the TV show Weeds, as B-sides. The Hives are having “Chinese Democracy“-like troubles recording their new album, so expect their next album to be released in or around 2014. Photo: Dyson/Getty
