One of the finest retrospectives of the Jackson brothers available, this 20-song collection impresses with its sheer comprehensive reach. The set spans from the group's earliest hits for Motown--including, of course, 1970's stupendously joyful "I Want You Back," the simple love lesson of "ABC," and the plaintive ballad "I'll Be There"--straight through to "Billie Jean" from Michael Jackson's 1982 opus, THRILLER. Between are Michael's earliest solo efforts, including the funky "Rockin' Robin," and "Ben" (the world's only love song to a rat), along with Jermaine's 1980 single "Let's Get Serious." "Dancing Machine," the last track recorded under the name Jackson 5, shows the brothers edging toward a more streamlined, disco-oriented sound, a direction they continued when they began to record as the Jacksons. The group's latter incarnation is well represented on the Philly soul-influenced "Show You the Way to Go" (Philadelphia soulsters Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff wrote and produced the Jacksons's first albums for Epic), and on the Jacksons-written-and-produced singles "Blame It on the Boogie" and the eminently grooving "Shake Your Body." The set winds up at the dawn of Michael's spectacularly successful solo career, closing out the final chapter on this superb pop-soul ensemble.
