- pleasantly surprised

I bought this on a whim, not knowing what to expect (as the packaging gives no hint of what is inside) and was pleasantly surprised. Most of the tracks (the first 9) are from the Royal Albert Hall concert in Feb., 1969, and as far as live Hendrix goes, this ranks about in the middle. Which means worth having. "Sunshine" is the best Hendrix version I have heard, extended and a bit experimentalist. "Wild Thing" is pretty similar to the Monterrey version, complete with the "Strangers in the Night" insert in the bridge. "Purple Haze" is pretty good, and contains the line "Scuse me whhile I kiss this guy", which Jimi sometimes sang as a joke. "Voodoo Chile" is incandescent. The liner notes brag that this is a pared down version of the event, with the chaff eliminated, which makes the last 6 tracks even more disappointing (as detailed in a previous review). The rock'n'roll version of "Red House", however, is worthwhile, as it makes the "NYC '68" album (and its ilk) totally redundant.

- Not -so -Rare as Love

Just another rehash of the Albert Hall '69 show, Scene club jam, and some Lonnie Youngblood recordings that may or may not have Hendrix involvement. Quality is so-so. Long time collectors have this stuff over and over again. Newbies, stay away from this. Try one of the "official" MCA releases...
