Creation Records Founder McGee Tells Bands to “Do It Yourself”

Alan McGee, the former head of Creation Records who is credited with discovering artists like Oasis and the Libertines, spoke out against record labels in an interview with XFM. McGee urged new bands not to sign with labels, saying “I’d recommend a band not to go to any record label, I think they’re all fucking rubbish. You’re better off doing it yourself. They’re living in the past.” McGee apparently practices what he preaches, as Poptones Records, the company he founded following the demise of Creation, has pretty much ceased to exist as the music industry continues to tilt digitally. Poptones was responsible for bringing the Hives to the U.K. and released side projects of bands like the Beta Band and the Icarus Line. The label’s website went offline this past May.

New Music Tuesdays: Ghostface Killah, The Libertines

Rolling Stone’s Christian Hoard says Ghostface Killah’s The Big Doe Rehab is another stellar album from the Wu-Tang MC, though it doesn’t quite measure up to last year’s Fishscale and lacks some of that album’s colorful drug-slinging tales. The Libertines’ new best-of comp pulls together songs from the short-lived band’s first two albums and an EP — enough for new fans to get a taste of Pete Doherty and Carl Barat’s fiesty band, but not enough to justify doling out your hard-earned cash. "Shotter's Nation" by Babyshambles

Pete Doherty, as it's been painfully documented in the UK tabloid press, likes to play with fire. The drug-addled, Kate Moss-squiring former co-head of The Libertines has seemed to spend more time in court than on tour, and his antics have ended one band prematurely and threatened to derail his "second chance" as Babyshambles, whose inconsistent first album, Down in Albion, raised the question of whether Doherty was worth all the fuss and ink. Probably no one merits all that attention, but Shotter's Nation serves as a minor triumph for Doherty nonetheless. More focused in approach but still ramshackle in sound, the album skips gleefully from vintage Brit-pop to acoustic balladry to finger-snapping soul. Fans of The Kinks, The Clash and The Strokes will all find kernels to latch onto. Some of the raw nerve factor may have been reduced, but the consistency proves to be an acceptable

McCarren Park Pool to Be Commandeered by Children, Not Just Overgrown Ones

The most up-to-date plans to turn the site back into a place for actual swimming were presented, along with the image above and a tentative blueprint you'll find after the jump, last night at Brooklyn's Community Board 1 meeting: By summer 2011, the pool will reopen with a capacity of 1,400; come that winter, people will be able to ice-skate there, too. Oh, You Crazy Kids!

The latest in bizzaro, probably drug-induced behavior to come from our favorite wacky couple, Kate Moss and Pete Doherty, is an incident in which Pete dangled Kate out of a building window for photographers to see. He had her sort of leaning out of the window backwards, looking quite nonchalant, whilst he played his guitar in her face. Oh, you crazy Europeans! Such crazy customs! And on another surprising note, Pete Doherty and his former bandmate, Carl Barat, recently shocked their fans by reuniting on stage for the first time since the break-up for their band, "The Libertines." According to The Sun: The crowd went wild as Carl walked on stage wearing a black suit and pork pie hat and simply said: "Hello." The pals then burst into boisterous renditions of What A Waster and Death On The Stairs. There was a mass singalong during Don't Look Back Into The Sun, France and Time For Heroes. Firmly burying the hatchet, Carl took lead vocals on What Katie Did -- which his BABYSHAMBLES pal wrote for him to sing on their old band's self-titled album. Well, that's nice. Our First 24 Hours in the LDN

You see Princess Skanky up there? That's about how we looked like early Monday morning after an incredible day and night in London! We've gone from Los Angeles to Miami, where we went to a super fun private concert at Gloria Estefan's house on Friday, to arriving in the U.K. on Sunday. After checking in to our uber posh hotel, The Hempel, we skipped a power nap and met up with Kimberly Stewart for a Top Shop fashion show. Even though she was promised to be there, Kate Moss failed to show up. Apparently she was "sick" or on vacation or doing drugs somewhere! The show was cute, though. More cute was a party for Alexander McQueen that we went to at Boom Box in Shoredicth/Hoxton Square, the most hip and happening Sunday night party in all of London. Vogue vet Hamish Bowles was there as was Miz Kelly Osbourne, who was actually quite delightful and was able to (genuinely) laugh at THIS! Boom Box was thriving with fashionistas that are six months ahead of any trend. It's where designers go to "find" inspiration. And it's such a hot time. After sweating for a while on the dancefloor, we hightailed it over to Boujis, a favorite hotspot of Princes Harry & William, hoping that we would run into a royal or two. But, instead, we had another encounter with Princess Sluttyienna. She must have a thing for gay dudes! First Hayden Christensen and now us??? Maybe we were really drunk but we could swear that Slutty wanted to make out with Perez. And we were THISCLOSE to doing it. But it was more fun to let her ramble. She talked a lot of about the Libertines - not the band but the literary writers, comparing the Gossip Gangstar to them. She also asserted yet again that she's not really a slut. Ok. We believe you. Wink wink. Sienna also discussed THIS OUTFIT, subject of much scorn, which she says she wore to the Factory Girl after-party as an homage to her character in the film, Edie Sedgwick.
