"Calibration" by Omar Rodriguez-LopezThe Mars Volta axeman Omar Rodriguez-Lopez may very well be 21st-century prog-rock's most eclectic and prolific maestro. In addition to releasing The Mars Volta's fantastic The Bedlam in Goliath this year, he has also crafted a diverse and engaging solo opus in the form of his N2O Records debut, Calibration. His trademark, mind-bending guitar playing takes center stage on cuts like "Una Ced Lacerante" and especially the gorgeous "Cortar El Cuello." Schizophrenic melodies transform into soothing, clean passages as Rodriguez-Lopez formulates a complete sonic headtrip. Like many solo records, Calibration has its fair share of high-profile collaborations. The Mars Volta's biggest fan John Frusciante pops up on the standout track "Glosa Picaresca Wou Men," adding his distinctive howl to Rodriguez-Lopez's acid-drenched playing. Meanwhile, Mars Volta vocalist Cedric Bixler-Zavala appears on the title track as well as on "...Is Pushing

"The Bedlam in Goliath" by The Mars VoltaOn their latest album, The Bedlam in Goliath, The Mars Volta erect epic, futuristic soundscapes, and then they obliterate them to hell. Such is the beautiful paradox at the heart of The Mars Volta's newest and best offering since their 2003 breakout debut, De-loused in the Comatorium. Instead of again venturing into the doldrums of the cosmos with the over-extended jams prevalent on Amputechure and Frances the Mute, The Mars Volta keep it simple. Well, "simple" is a relative term with this band—there are, of course, a few cuts that extend the nine-minute mark, but they have solid structures. Album opener "Aberinkula" sets the dynamic vibe of the record with a frenetic, rollercoaster riff, a horn section and insanely complicated rhythms. "Ilyena" is catchy and hypnotic, allowing for some necessary noodling in between choruses, while the ethereal delay, military style drum build-up and epic guitar riffs of "Goliath" are bound to satisfy heshers, prog

Flaming Lips’ Christmas Flick Gets Release Season, Mars Volta Album Delayed, Zeppelin to Re-Release Concert Film Christmas on Mars, the sci-fi Xmas epic written and directed by the Flaming Lips’ Wayne Coyne, will finally hit theaters next Spring On Earth. The film, which has been in various states of production for the last six years, stars Lips’ multi-instrumentalist Stephen Drozd as Major Syrtis, an astronaut who celebrates the first Christmas on the red planet after its been colonized. Modest Mouse’s Isaac Brock, Elijah Wood, and Entourage’s Adam Goldberg all appear in cameos. The Mars Volta have delayed their new album Bedlam in Goliath until January 29th, 2008. The album was supposed to be released this year, but Mars Volta probably didn’t want to compete in the same season as Radiohead’s In Rainbows. Led Zeppelin has a consolation prize for all those fans who weren’t lucky enough to buy tickets to their reunion: The Song Remains the Same, Zep’s 1976 concert film, will be re-released as a special-edition DVD and CD this fall. The CD will feature all fourteen songs from the Madison Square Garden concert on disc for the first time. Thanks to Apple showing their new iPod nano commercial at least one hundred times per day per channel, Feist’s “1, 2, 3, 4” has been soaring up the Billboard Digital Charts, coming in this week at number eight. Lil Wayne and Fabolous will perform tonight at a benefit concert at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Proceeds from the event will go to the family of Lt. Corey Dahlem, a Gainesville police officer who was killed by a drunk driver.
