Festival Roundup: Bumbershoot, Virgin Calgary Announces Lineups Another pair of summer festivals unveiled their lineups yesterday, and strangely neither included Jack Johnson. At Seattle’s three-day Bumbershoot Music & Arts Festival, to be held August 30-September 1, the headliners are Beck, the reunited Stone Temple Pilots, Lucinda Williams and Neko Case. Also on the bill are Jakob Dylan, Lee “Scratch” Perry, the Walkmen, Ingrid Michaelson and more. Tickets are on sale now for that event. A few hundred miles northeast in Calgary, the city’s version of the Virgin Festival will feature headliners STP and the Tragically Hip, with the Flaming Lips, the New Pornographers and a parade of Canadian bands round out the bill. Tickets for that fest, which will be held June 21 and 22, go on sale Saturday. It was previously announced that the Baltimore Virgin would get the Foo Fighters, Kanye West, Nine Inch Nails and STP, while Toronto’s headliners were Oasis and Spiritualized. The lineup for Vancouver’s Virgin Festival still has yet to be announced. Single Minded: The Roots, New Pornographers, Foxboro Hot Tubs and More Every Tuesday Single Minded highlights new tracks hitting stores (or the Web) this week. On Fridays, come back for rarities, remixes, mash-ups and more. The Roots ft. Patrick Stump, “Birthday Girl” [Axed Track] We know, this leaked a while ago. But let’s take one last run through this track, just excised from the Roots’ forthcoming album, before it vanishes into history’s dustbin forever. Meanwhile in New Jersey, Gerard Way wonders why Common has suddenly stopped returning his calls. Various Artists, “Remix Sunday” [Mixtape] Nonstop dance party featuring amped-up remixes of the Streets, 50 Cent, Michael Jackson and Portishead. Sadly, they are not all on the same song. Blu & Exile, “Blue Collar Worker” [Video] In case you haven’t figured it out, Single Minded has a fetish for a very particular sound of hip-hop. We wait anxiously for the day when the world will embrace the brilliance of Blu & Exile. In the meantime, enjoy this video like it’s your own little secret. The New Pornographers, Live on National Public Radio [Live] Once again, hard-earned taxpayer dollars are going to fund pornography. Foxboro Hot Tubs, “The Pedestrian” [Internet Single] New single from California’s Foxboro Hot Tubs, a band that sounds and looks and behaves suspiciously like Green Day. Not that we’re making any allegations. We’re just saying. They sound an awful lot like Green Day. It’s almost as if this were some sort of Green Day side project or something.

Rilo Kiley Admit to Becoming Amateur Pornographers for “Moneymaker” VideoBe careful which porn flicks you audition for — you might inadvertently wind up in a Rilo Kiley video. The band’s indie pinup of a frontwoman, Jenny Lewis, has revealed the casting process for the band’s provocative clip for “Moneymaker,” the first single from Under the Blacklight, out August 21. “We told people they were coming in and auditioning for a porno,” the singer recalls. “We sat them down and asked them about their experiences. … We met some really interesting, nice people.” The whole process allowed Lewis to indulge one of her new interests: exploring her own increasingly loose attitudes about sex and music. “As a woman, the older I get the more comfortable I feel writing about sex and singing about it,” she explains. “Now I feel comfortable enough where I can start writing about sex — not necessarily about my own experiences, but the sexual lives of others. And the somewhat deviant sexual lives of others.”

Neko Case Kicks Off Tour With Bawdy, Ferocious Austin GigPhoto: Miller/FilmMagic “Welcome to the first night of our tour, which is fucking terrifying,” said alt-country siren Neko Case, the orange-flecked acoustic guitar in her hands a match for her fiery locks. She and her five bandmates, including a female backup singer with whom she traded potty-mouth banter, kicked off their 34-date U.S. tour last night at Stubb’s in Austin not with a song from their critically lauded new album, Middle Cyclone, but with “Maybe Sparrow” from 2006’s Fox Confessor Brings the Flood. It was likely a nod to opener Shearwater, a majestic local rock band fronted by part-time ornithologist Jonathan Meiburg, whom Case said her group had a “music crush” on. But as soon as Case gave that love she took it away, with a ferocious rendition of “People Got a Lotta Nerve,” wherein she sang, “I’m a man man man, man man man eater/But still you’re surprised prised prised when I eat ya.” Talk about a case study in a Case song. The insatiable animal fetish. The long-distance vocal runs. The subtle outro trills. No wonder her prey was duped. (Read our recent Neko Case feature, Neko Case’s Animal Instincts .) Case said she and the band had been rehearsing in Austin for a spell leading up to the show. “We’ve been eating fried food for days and feel ready to rock America,” she said, adding, “and Canada,” as if not to forget the north-of-the-border fans she’s accumulated from her days in the New Pornographers. It was one of many pre-song admissions Case made throughout a set split fairly evenly between Cyclone and Fox Confessor, in favor of T Bone Burnett-meets-Something Wicked This Way Comes atmospherics, and yielding of an appreciation for the natural world. She said “The Pharaohs” was about her first love, a “Burt Reynolds unicorn” (yes, you read that correctly). She also said this was the first time she’d played “I’m an Animal” live. “I’m gonna fuck it up,” she said. Well, she didn’t. Not even close. Related Stories: • Neko Case’s Animal Instincts • Neko Ca
