On the Charts: Coldplay’s “Viva” Hangs On to Number One The Big News: For the second consecutive week, Coldplay’s Viva La Vida held off Lil Wayne to grab the top spot. Despite a 66% sales decrease from its debut week, Viva La Vida still sold 249,000 copies as the album edged closer to a million copies sold. Tha Carter III remained at number two, selling another 200,000 copies, while the Camp Rock soundtrack hung around at three for another week. Mötley Crüe’s comeback album Saints of Los Angeles debuted at four with 99,000 units, and Three 6 Mafia’s Last 2 Walk rounded out the top five in its debut week. Debuts: Jacksonville hard-rockers Shinedown and their third album The Sound of Madness came in at eight, Sigur Ros’ Meo suo í eyrum vio spilum endalaust entered at 15 and Fueled by Ramen recruits Cute Is What We Aim For debuted at 21 with their sophomore album Rotation. Further down, RZA/Bobby Digital’s “fun” Digi Snacks got 6,800 parties started on its way to 111 and Alejandro Escovedo’s Real Animal placed at 122. Last Week’s Heroes: No one sold over 700,000 copies this time around, but last week’s heroes still occupied the upper-tier of the charts. The only big drop out of the top ten was the Offspring, who’s Rise & Fall, Rage & Grace fell from 10 to 24. Congratulations to Amy Winehouse, as her Back to Black reached double platinum status stateside. With no major releases out this week (sorry G Unit), look for Chris Martin and Weezy to duke it out for the top spot once again. [Photo: Bryan Bedder/Getty]

On the Charts: Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida” Continues Big Sales Trend The Big News: As predicted, Coldplay’s Viva La Vida cruised to the top, selling 722,000 copies in its debut week. Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter III followed up a million-selling week by placing second with 308,000 copies, a 69% sales drop. Still, the big weeks by Coldplay and Weezy represent only the second time in Soundscan history that two different albums had sales over 700,000 in consecutive weeks. The feat was last accomplished in May 2000, when Britney Spears’ Oops… I Did It Again and Eminem’s The Marshall Mathers LP both sold over a million in their debut weeks. Rounding out the top five, the soundtrack for Camp Rock came in at three, NOW 28 took four and Plies’ Definition of Real bowed at five. Debuts: It’s not quite a debut, but the reissue of Rihanna’s Good Girl Gone Bad helped the album jump from 124 to seven. A trifecta of debuts claimed the 9-10-11 spots, with Katy Perry’s One of the Boys, the Offspring’s Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace and Judas Priest’s Nostradamus all shifting units in the 40Ks. On the indie front, Wolf Parade’s At Mount Zoomer claimed 46 despite an early leak and the Hold Steady’s Stay Positive entered at 170 in its first week of digital-only release. Last Week’s Heroes: Despite the big decrease in sales, Lil Wayne was still a hero, as the 308,000 he sold in his second week would definitely claim the number one slot any other non-Coldplay week. With six new entries in this week’s top eleven, there was a lot of shuffling. My Morning Jacket’s Evil Urges was the biggest victim, dropping from nine to 24. And congratulations Rock N Roll Jesus, as Kid Rock’s album went platinum in its 37th week. [Photo: Getty]

Single Minded: Judas Priest, Katy Perry, The Offspring and More Every Tuesday Single Minded highlights new tracks hitting stores (or the Web) this week. On Fridays, come back for rarities, remixes, mash-ups and more. Judas Priest, Nostradamus [Full Album Stream] Judas Priest, now permanently reunited with vocalist Rob Halford, scored a concept record about the man who predicted the Earth would crumble and the skies would fall. Somewhere in Central Ohio, ex-Priest replacement vocalist Tim “Ripper” Owens predicts Table Three is probably ready to see a dessert menu. Katy Perry, “U R So Gay” [MySpace] Ex-Christian popper Perry unveils a “charming” song about a fey, self-pleasuring ex-lover who has the gall to drive a hybrid car, avoid meat and enjoy Hemingway and Mozart. What a nightmare. The Offspring, “Hammerhead” [MySpace] The first single from OC punk’s latest is a touching, endearing tribute to the most overlooked of the Star Wars creatures. Ponytail, “Beg Waves” [MySpace] S-M’s pick of the week: we envision a world where breakout bands don’t need wan conventionalities like lyrics and choruses and big bounding hooks. All they need is energy and enthusiasm in endless supply. In that world — which we will all hopefully inhabit someday — Ponytail are king. Craig G & Marley Marl, “Made the Change” [MySpace] This insta-classic banger comes from G’s just-released Operation Save Hip-Hop, an album surely destined for greater success than G’s last two outings, Operation Save Mid-Century Chamber Music and Operation Save 10% When You Apply For an Old Navy Card. Nicole Kidman Makes the Mistake of Asking the Paparazzi to Back Off Her DaughterNicole Kidman, who will soon be busy promoting her film Australia, opening in November, made the not-unprecedented-but-still-uncommon step of producing an offspring and then not selling photos of it to the tabloids.
