Rewind: The Week in Rock DailyPhoto: Kravitz/FilmMagic We caught soon-to-be Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Metallica’s surprise SXSW performance, then hung out with James Hetfield to talk Guitar Hero. Plus, the heavy metal gods announced more tour dates, released a “Broken, Beat and Scarred” video and invited Jason Newsted to join them at the Rock Hall ceremony (”The Black Album will be back,” Newsted told RS.) And that cop who urinated on fans at a Metallica show in Boston is no longer a police officer. Kanye West, Jane’s Addiction, Devo, OutKast’s Big Boi, the Hold Steady, Circle Jerks, Juliette and the New Romantiques, Silversun Pickups, Airborne Toxic Event and Little Boots are just a fraction of the big-name artists and emerging acts Rock Daily caught down in Austin, Texas last weekend. Check out our SXSW coverage for the full scoop. We learned that Billy Corgan is to Smashing Pumpkins what Axl Rose is to Guns n’ Roses after drummer Jimmy Chamberlin left the band. Chamberlin explained he couldn’t “cash the check” anymore. Prince finally launched his colorful Lotusflow3r Website, giving fans an early taste of his three new albums and allowing them to watch all that footage the Web Sheriff banned from YouTube for the price of $77. Lotusflow3r, MPLSound and Elixir all hit Target Sunday.

Readers’ Rock List: Super Bowl Halftime PerformersPhoto: Kravitz/FilmMagic Last week, following Bruce Springsteen’s Super Bowl halftime performance, Rock Daily asked our readers who should take the stage during halftime of the Big Game in 2010. After more than 400 responses, the readers agreed that it was about time the Who got their due. Considering the game will be broadcast on CBS, home of those CSI shows that feature the Who as theme music, the pick makes perfect sense. Other acts making the list include the possible (Van Halen) to the impossible (Led Zeppelin) to the awesomely impossible (Guns n’ Roses.) Check out the full readers’ list below: 1. The Who 2. Pearl Jam 3. Guns n’ Roses 4. Van Halen 5. Dave Matthews Band 6. Foo Fighters 7. Red Hot Chili Peppers 8. AC/DC 9. Neil Young 10. Led Zeppelin 11. Radiohead 12. R.E.M. 13. Eagles 14. The Killers 15. Single Minded: Death Cab Cover the Cure, Gaslight Anthem Rule “Letterman”Photo: Winter/WireImage Death Cab for Cutie, “Love Song” [Cure Cover] One sad face deserves another: Ben Gibbard provides further proof that everyone who grew up in the suburbs owned a copy of Disintegration. If only he and Death Cab could swoop in and save Robert Smith from himself. The Gaslight Anthem, “The ‘59 Sound” [Live on Letterman] We’ve had this longstanding rule that no live band sounds good on TV. And then we saw NJ’s Gaslight Anthem on Letterman and concluded that either a) our rule was wrong, b) they are, in fact, the band of our generation, or c) some combination thereof. Absolutely breathtaking. The Police, “Roxanne” [Discotech Remix] Heart-stopping and electrifying, Discotech paint the Police bright pink and take them for a night on the town. Charlie Ash, “I Wanna Sex You Up” [Color Me Badd Cover] The critical reappraisal of Color Me Badd begins right here, with this aggro cover of their most grammatically improbable hit. Various Artists, “The Covers Mixtape” [Covers] Fourteen artists tackling 14 songs that aren’t their own, all of them handling their source material with class and panache. Start with Steve Earle’s rollicking punk/country cover of “Breed” and work outwards from there.

Iggy & The Stooges’ Stolen Truck Found, But No Instruments OnboardCanadian police have recovered the truck that was carrying Iggy & the Stooges’ equipment that was stolen outside the band’s Montreal hotel. Unfortunately, all the instruments had already been removed from the vehicle and remain missing. The truck was found several blocks from the hotel. The Stooges are set to play a concert tonight in Toronto using borrowed equipment. Since the majority of the equipment had serial numbers, the possibility to resell the instruments will be difficult, police said. On losing his long-time Gibson bass, Mike Watt said “Her last gig was smoking. Igg was going off and the Montreal people were pumped up.” The band set up a website detailing their lost equipment here. [Photo: Hogan/Getty]

Rage Against the Machine Schedule Show Near Republican ConventionFollowing their near-riot-inducing performance at this weekend’s Lollapalooza, Rage Against the Machine have scheduled another concert they probably hope has similar results. The band announced that they’ll perform in Minneapolis’ Target Center on September 3rd, which is significant because that’s the same week the Republican National Convention rolls into the Twin City of St. Paul. In 2000, the band played an outdoor show in Los Angeles during the Democratic National Convention, and that show ended with police using tear gas and pepper spray. In the announcement of the Minneapolis show, Rage made no mention of the political overtones their show will carry, but Tom Morello has already revealed he will play a union rally with Steve Earle in St. Paul on September 1st, the first day of the RNC. Protest isn’t free, though: tickets for Rage’s show in Prince’s hometown are $60 and go on sale Saturday. [Photo: Getty]

News Ticker: Voodoo Festival, Velvet Revolver and Live Nation Death Cab for Cutie, Panic at the Disco, Lupe Fiasco and more acts have been added to New Orleans’ Voodoo Festival on October 24-26. Wyclef and Tokyo Police Club also join a lineup that includes headliners Nine Inch Nails, R.E.M. and Stone Temple Pilots. Unknown singers lobbying to be Velvet Revolver’s new vocalist are campaigning on YouTube to get heard. While VR’s Matt Sorum admitted the band has listened to submissions mailed to the band, it’s unknown if the group is using YouTube to recruit a Scott Weiland replacement. According to reports, Live Nation chairman Michael Cohl is currently negotiating his exit from the concert giant. As we reported last week, Cohl had been feuding with Live Nation over the company’s direction. Cohl’s departure may have affected a potential Rolling Stones deal (a contract the band has denied), as Cohl has promoted every Stones tour since 1989. [Photo: Getty]

News Ticker: Poison, Santogold, Young Jeezy and Steven Tyler Poison are suing Capitol Records, claiming the major label has underpaid the band royalties for years. The reunited hair band is seeking $25,000 in damages. Santogold has been sued by a bizarre singer/actor/infomercial star named Santo Gold for name infringement, claiming he’s been the rightful owner of the name since 1983. Rapper Young Jeezy was arrested in Atlanta early yesterday morning on a litany of driving-related charges, including DUI. Jeezy was pulled over when police saw him speeding in a Corvette that had no license plates. As evidenced by his appearance courtside during the Celtics Game 6 win over the Lakers, Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler is out of rehab. [Photo: Getty]

Radiohead To Play Another London Free Show Radiohead will perform another free concert on April 1st, this time within the more spacious confines of London’s BBC Radio Theatre. Unlike the band’s last first-come/first-served show in January — when thousands of fans mobbed the streets trying to get wristbands that would grant them access to a venue that was ultimately deemed too tiny by police, forcing it to a larger location — the BBC will give out tickets either by applying by phone or winning them over the airwaves. “You’d be a fool to miss the concert,” said Radio 2 head of music Jeff Smith, making reference to the concert’s scheduling on April Fools Day. The gig will serve as a warm-up for Radiohead before they begin the first leg of their U.S. tour in May. [Photo: Getty]

News Ticker: Akon, Will.i.Am, Jennifer Lopez, Motley Crue Eight people were arrested at a free Akon show at a Denmark mall on Wednesday after violence erupted when a fire alarm went off. Police were reportedly physically attacked as they tried to evacuate the 3,000 attendees. Will.i.am is working on another pro-Barack Obama track, called “We Are the Ones,” MTV reports. Jessica Alba, George Lopez and others will lend their voices to the song. Jennifer Lopez has given birth to twins, her manager confirmed to People. The boy and girl were born just after midnight this morning. Motley Crue will reportedly release their ninth album on July 8th. The Dirt is the band’s first studio record since 2000, and Crue is expected to begin a world tour after it hits stores. [Photo: Getty]

Are the Police Planning a New Album? No one could have predicted the Police would have made it this far in their reunion tour without Stewart Copeland severely injuring Sting. If the band can make it the rest of the way without imploding, guitarist Andy Summers is hinting that the trio might have a new album left in them. “I would see it as a challenge, to make an absolutely brilliant pop album at this stage of our career, and that would be something quite remarkable,” Summers told the Associated Press (the band hasn’t released an album of new material since 1983’s Synchronicity). Summers went on to say the trio is more concerned with keeping things on-kilter on the road than exploring the possibility of recording new music, “Right now it is just the tour holding everything together mentally, physically and musically. The tour and the traveling and the playing and the tension you have to keep to do it every night is all-devouring. It is just too much.” So keep your fingers crossed that Copeland can play nice until the tour ends next year. Smiths Fans Ride Bikes To Save Manchester Landmark Manchester’s loyal Smiths fans are coming to the rescue of the Salford Lad’s Club, which is featured on the cover of the Smith’s 1986 opus The Queen is Dead. The club is currently undergoing an expensive renovation, which has been threatened by a band of (neither sweet nor tender) hooligans who made off with expensive roofing materials. When word spread that the renovation might not proceed as a result, local fans decided to organize a bike tour of iconic Smiths-related Manchester area spots in order to raise awareness of the club’s plight and inspire people to contribute money for replacement materials. The bike ride is scheduled for September 30, pending police approval.

Led Zeppelin Announce Reissues, Madonna Collabo Hits the Web, Police Say “Don’t Call It a Reunion” Led Zeppelin will be putting out three reissues starting with a two-disc best-of collection called Mothership on November 13. A week later, their 1976 concert movie The Song Remains the Same will hit stores as a DVD, as will a repackaged version of its soundtrack bolstered with unreleased material. “Candy Shop,” the alleged first cut of the Madonna/Justin Timberlake/Timbaland super-collaboration, has found its way online. The Spice Girls have expanded their upcoming reunion tour following more than 3 million requests for tickets. The Police have added a fourth night in Toronto to their much discussed tour, though guitarist Andy Summers says the band hasn’t reunited, but come together “more like a new band.” Online punks have started a very DIY rumor: that Fugazi will reunite in September.
