News Ticker: Morrissey, The Pretenders, Van Morrison and “Mamma Mia!”Photo: Getty Morrissey signed with Lost Highway to release his next album Years of Refusal Stateside. Refusal is due out February 17th, with a single “Black Cloud” out February 2nd. The former Smiths singer will also tour the U.S. The Pretenders will release an iTunes Originals set of their reimagined hits on December 23rd. The band will also unwrap a digital holiday EP, featuring Chrissie Hynde take on songs like “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus” and “Blue Christmas.” Van Morrison’s Astral Weeks live from the Hollywood Bowl will be released in early ‘09 on the rocker’s own label, Listen to the Lions Records, which will be distributed by EMI. While CDs struggle, DVDs are seemingly doing pretty well: The ABBA-infused Mamma Mia! film sold 2.25 million copies in the U.S. its first week. In the U.K., the DVD sold 3.2 million to break Titanic’s decade-old first week record.

Radiohead Lead Featured Artists Coalition, Seek Greater RightsPhoto: Getty Radiohead, Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour, the Pretenders’ Chrissie Hynde and Iron Maiden are among the initial artists to sign up for and usher in the launch of the new Featured Artists Coalition. As the music industry continues to shift into the digital age, the Coalition seeks to protect the artist’s rights over their own music. “We want all artists to have more control of their music and a much fairer share of the profits it generates in the digital age,” a statement on the FAC’s website reads. “We speak with one voice to help artists strike a new bargain with record companies, digital distributors and others, and are campaigning for specific changes.” The FAC has also penned a six-step manifesto for “fair play,” including increased compensation for commercial use of their music and changes to copyright law. Other members of the Coalition include Kate Nash, Roxy Music’s Bryan Ferry, Gang of Four, Billy Bragg and the Verve. Coldplay Gifts Fans With Pretenders Cover, Thom Yorke to Release Remixes, Jay-Z’s “Gangster” Meets the Real “Godfather” and More With only twelve days to go ’til Christmas, Coldplay has posted an early present on their Web site for their fans: “2000 Miles,” the band’s cover of the Pretenders song. “We love Christmas songs, but every time we try and write one it’s awful,” Chris Martin writes. Maybe Martin could learn a thing or two from the Killers. Thom Yorke will revisit his solo career early next year as he releases three 12′’ singles featuring nine remixes of tracks from his debut album The Eraser. Among the remixers are the Field, Burial, Four Tet and Modeselektor. The seventh annual Ponderosa Stomp is branching out to include conference panels next year. The American music fest will take place April 29th and 30th in New Orleans and feature performances by Ronnie Spector, Roky Erickson and more. To celebrate getting picked up for another season on HBO, or because they’re just overflowing with humor, mock rockers Flight of the Conchords will release a full-length album in April 2008. From Broadway to the Mafia way: After Jay-Z’s American Gangster received the show-tune treatment, now DJ Skee has mashed-up Jigga’s new album with the score from The Godfather.

Phish to Headline Bonnaroo 2009, Sources SayPhoto: Getty Bonnaroo, the East Coast’s premiere multi-day, multi-stage gathering of the vibes (held in Manchester, Tennessee from June 11th to 14th) usually doesn’t release its lineup until early February — but RollingStone.com hears from reliable sources close to Phish that the band will top the bill for two nights, restoring the fest to its jam-friendly roots. It would be the fifth time frontman Trey Anastasio appears on the ‘Roo stage, having performed as a solo artist in 2002 and 2004, with bandmate Mike Gordon in 2006 and alongside Matisyahu in 2005. Phish announced their official reunion and first public gigs in four years (their March 6-9th Hampton, Virginia shows) in early October; reps for the band and the fest declined comment for this story. Also being buzzed about with some legitimacy: Bruce Springsteen as Sunday night’s closer. No pressure, but there is a deadline approaching for pre-sale tickets and VIP packages. As for Coachella, the fest reputed for reuniting many a dormant band (the Pixies in 2004, Rage Against the Machine in 2007), Blur is believed to be a frontrunner, though a show scheduled for London’s Hyde Park in July raises some doubt — would the Brits really forestall a comeback gig on their home turf for a U.S. one-off jaunt? We think it’s more likely Britney Spears would pull off a dance tent set, a la Madonna in 2006. (And wouldn’t you know it, Britney is off on Coachella Saturday, April 18th, between tour stops in Los Angeles and Anaheim.) Other artists currently looking at routing dates around the three-day party in the desert include Coachella vets Red Hot Chili Peppers as well as the Pretenders, the Killers, Keane and We Are Scientists.
