Rewind: The Week in Rock DailyPhoto: Mazur/Getty AC/DC graced their first ever cover of Rolling Stone the same week Black Ice sold 784,000 copies in the U.S. and topped the charts in over two dozen other countries. We went behind the scenes on the band’s cover shoot, watched their Excel video, sat front row at their tour-opening gig in Wilkes-Barre, previewed an excerpt from the cover story and looked back at AC/DC through the years. Led Zeppelin fans were greeted this week with news that the band would reunite for a tour. Unfortunately, the tour won’t include lead singer Robert Plant. While John Paul Jones insists they won’t hire a Plant facsimile, we took the liberty of searching for appropriate replacements. The makers of Rock Band defeated Guitar Hero in the war of the rights to the Beatles, as the Fab Four revealed they’ll have their own video game out next year. However, Guitar Hero countered with a brand new game for Nintendo DS! We also explored the season’s upcoming video games. Sad news this week as Jennifer Hudson’s mother, brother and nephew were found murdered in Chicago. The Hudson family received condolences from everyone from Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell to Queen Latifah and Barack Obama. Fortunately, police recovered the murder weapon, an essential piece toward putting away the alleged killer.

Former Replacements Drummer Chris Mars’ Dark “Tolerance”Photo: Courtesy Jonathan Levine Gallery Chris Mars made a name for himself as the spastic timekeeper in the Replacements, the booze-soaked Minneapolis post-punk band he helped co-found. But with rock stardom in his rearview, Mars has made a second splash in the art world. Tolerance, his first book, collects 159 paintings created between 2000 and 2007. Mars’ work is surreal and gothic, equal parts Tim Burton film, Tool video and demented children’s cartoon, with titles like “Fuck If I’ll Hold My Tongue” and “Miserably Obedient.” Tolerance also includes essays and notes by Mars, which helps to illustrate the evolution of his work from the deeply personal (his early work was inspired by his brother’s schizophrenia) to the intensely political (as the intro to a piece called “The Plea,” Mars writes, “Mother (Cindy) Sheehan at top is represented in all-out anger as her voice and her every breath relases the spirit of her fallen son Casey…Bush, yellow dunce, is at the center of the mess.”). Tolerance is available through Billy Shire Fine Arts Press. Hot Issue Hits and Misses: Nas and Cory Branan Rolling Stone’s 2008 Hot Issue spotlights acts like Band of Horses and Vampire Weekend (more on that here). All week, we’ve been taking a look at Hot Issue hits and misses from the past twenty-one years (because nobody’s cultural thermometer is accurate all the time). Hit: “A savior,” we called him. “The hip-hop Proust.” Whatever insane expectations we placed on Nas, the Hot Rapper of 1994, he’s lived up to them. He’s since feuded with Jay-Z and somehow survived, he married the girl who’s milkshake brings all the boys to the yard (Kelis), and he’s one of the few rappers who has credibility enough to claim Hip Hop Is Dead. Unfortunately, Nas’ hotness didn’t rub off on his 1994 Hot List page 64 neighbor, Hot Athlete/Baltimore Orioles Jeffrey Hammonds, who finished his disappointing baseball career in 2005 after playing for six teams over the course of twelve years. Miss: In his 2002 Hot Singer-Songwriter write-up, we (and his Wikipedia page) had the audacity to mention Cory Branan in the same sentence as peers Ryan Adams and Bright Eyes. Branan’s The Hell You Say lead to appearances on David Letterman, Carson Daly and our Hot List, but it would be another four years before Branan’s sophomore album 12 Songs was released to little fanfare. Branan also probably wins the award for Hot Lister with the smallest MySpace following (7,458 fans as of right now). Snoop Teams Up With Beckham, Winehouse Appeals Marijuana Charge, Arcade Fire Get Bottled It’s not quite Dr. Dre, but Snoop Dogg has found a new Los Angelino to collaborate with: David Beckham. Snoop and Posh Spice’s hubby have formed an unusual bond (Beckham has even taught Dogg’s kids how to play soccer). The Doggfather says, “We’re talking about putting our money together to do a movie. It’s incredibly exciting. We both love fashion too, and we might even do a fashion label as well.” Amy Winehouse will appeal the marijuana-possession fine she paid after being arrested in Norway. Winehouse didn’t know that agreeing to pay a fine was equivalent to pleading guilty. The incident ultimately forced the singer to cancel her appearance at next week’s MTV’s Woodies. RS Breaking Artist the Black Lips will star in Let It Be, a movie loosely based on the story of alterna-gods the Replacements, as evidenced by the film’s title, which shares its name with an album by Paul Westerberg’s outfit. Repeat, this has nothing to do with the Beatles. The Arcade Fire have become the latest victim of the old British pastime of “bottle-hurling,” as Win Butler took one in the face during the band’s Halloween show in Nottingham. After a second bottle narrowly avoided hitting Butler, the AF singer declared the band would “never play Nottingham again.” Bling king Jacob the Jeweler will plead guilty to two counts of making false statements to investigators. Jacob also faced more severe money laundering charges, but those charges have been dropped thanks to the plea deal. He’s expected to serve roughly three to four and a half years in jail.
