Essential Reissue Alert: Sonic Youth’s Classic “Daydream Nation” Goes Deluxe for 2007When Sonic Youth’s Daydream Nation came out in 1988 it was welcomed as band’s first true mix of avant-garde experimentalism somewhat more conventional rock sounds. Since then it’s become a definitive record in the indie rock canon as well as an essential must-own for anyone who cares about where music has been and where it’s going (even the government likes it – Daydream Nation was chosen by the Library of Congress to be included in the National Recording Registry). The band is releasing a deluxe version of the landmark album on June 12th, which willl include a superb remastered studio version, live versions of every single song on the album culled from performances around the world on the band’s Daydream Nation tour, and several super-hard-to-find covers (the band’s versions of the Beatles’ “Within You Without You,” and Mudhoney’s “Touch Me, I’m Sick” are particularly covetable). We were extremely psyched about the band’s plans to do a series of summer shows during which they play nothing but Daydream Nation from start to finish, but after soaking in these sounds all day we’re certifiably giddy. To get you all pumped, here are a couple (unremastered) choice cuts from “Nation” – catchy enough to stick in your head, but noisy enough to annoy the crap out of your folks: “Teen Age Riot” [Listen] “Silver Rocket [Listen]

The Heath Ledger Sick Joker ToyHEATH Ledger is dead. But he lives on. Bow your heads and pray for Heath Ledger the laughing toy. Admittedly, not as offensive as the VirboLedger, the Brokeback Mountain male sex toy (with chaps and stirrups), nor the Skeleton Ledger, nor the Ledger Hot Poker, but no less of a sensation. The Star says Ledger plays The Joker in Batman flick The Dark Knight. The movie, we learn, is set to be this summer’s major blockbuster. And to mark its imminent arrival, and just a week after his funeral, Ledger’s Joker dolls have been unveiled. The doll comes in two versions. The first comes with a rocket launcher that can be put in the Joker’s hand. The second sees his character armed with a knife. Says a spokesman for the star’s family: “Heath was very proud of his work in the film and his family is aware and supportive of the plans for the movie of Warner Bros and its partners.” It’s all very tasteful. And fans of the film should look out for the Heath Ledger Sick Joke Book, coming, by our estimations, four weeks after the tragedy…

The new Indiana Jones movie: our verdict!Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull doesn’t screen to critics in London until Tuesday, but heat’s Film Editor Charles Gant caught its world premiere on Sunday in Cannes. Here’s what he made of it…
We’ve been on a bit of a rollercoaster ride with this one. When we first heard they were moving ahead with a fourth Indiana Jones movie, after a 19-year gap, our initial reaction was: bad idea. Harrison Ford is too old. Leave it alone. Then we got mildly excited about the casting of Shia LaBeouf as Indie’s young sidekick, and Cate Blanchett as a Russian villain. As the release date approached, we found ourselves getting sucked into the “blockbuster of the summer” hype. But was our first instinct right all along?
Nevada, 1957. KGB agents led by the icy Irina Spalko (Blanchett) attack a secret US military facility. They’ve already kidnapped Indiana Jones (Ford) and colleague Max (Ray Winstone), who they need to help them find what they’re looking for. Indy escapes their clutches, twice: first using some rocket-propelled piece of military kit; then inside a lead-lined fridge that somehow survives a nuclear explosion. Yes, it’s that kind of film, and it’s initially rather fun. Then young rebel Mutt (LaBeouf) shows up, and asks for Indy’s help on a rescue mission to Peru where his mum (Karen Allen) and archaeologist Professor Oxley (John Hurt) have gone missing. Pretty soon they’re whipcracking their way through jungle, sandpit and waterfall, trying to shake off Spalko’s crew and solve the mystery of a magnetic, transparent crystal skull and a famed lost city. And it’s while all this is occurring that you realise how thoroughly the National Treasure movies – and, to a lesser extent the Mummy ones – have looted the Indiana Jones franchise for ideas. Which means, despite the 19-year wait, this fourth edition doesn’t feel that fresh. A huge increase in the level of CGI marks out Crystal Skull from earlier Indiana Jones movies, but that only serves to make it s

Buns Of Steel [Monday Morning Box Office]1. Iron Man - $100.75 million Just when a lackluster spring box office had Hollywood worried, Iron Man jets into town, slapping his Stark™ brass-rocket-parts on the table and daring all challengers to do the same. (Batman was game, though gave up ten minutes into an unsuccessful attempt at unbuckling his utility belt. The Hulk, meanwhile, turned a shade of greenish-red and slinked out of the room, years of performance-enhancing gamma ray abuse having taken an irreversible toll on the contents of those stretchy purple pants.) No question about it, Iron Man enters the Great Movie Summer of 2008 a fearsome, armor-clad conquistador. Among its record-breaking achievements: · The second-highest grossing opening weekend ever for a non-sequel. · The tenth-highest grossing opening weekend overall. · The best opening ever for a Paramount live-action release (though the studio is only distributing and marketing it for Marvel Studios). The high-sheen, flame-resistant finish on the titanium-alloy cake? Iron Man's wadded-up-script-missile-launching capabilities paid off with a movie worth watching. 2. Made of Honor - $15.5 million Sony's Department of Counterscheduling Activities, meanwhile, are reportedly "feeling good, especially considering how big 'Iron Man' turned out to be," about the $15 million performance of Made of Honor. "But watch out for summer '09, when McDreamy plays Matrimony Man, flying around in a spandex tuxedo and zapping the underdog heroine with his twinkle-ray vision! Then we'll be looking at 9-figure openings, too." 3. Baby Mama - $10.332 million Here's proof positive that so-called "chick flicks" don't need to be set around weddings, star McDreamies, or be weighed down by jaw-droppingly stupid pun-titles to succeed. As Tina Fey's comedy—holding fairly steady with a 41% drop—ably proves, women are just as eager to pay to see unlikely buddy comedies about bright, barren women and the slightly brain-damaged embryo-recep

davidwilkins:: Unfried green tomatoes at the whistle stop kitchen. :: I posted pics over the summer of the produce I grew in our garden. Lettuce in abundance, tons of carrots and spring onions, but I'd left it quite late to plant out the tomatoes. I decided on Sunday 12th October that there was no way they'd ripen in the late Autumn, so having sown some winter spinach and rocket, I reckoned I might as well harvest the tomatoes green, and see what to do with them. I didn't, however, realise there was quite so many. I harvested 15lbs / 7kg of green tomatoes of varying size and quality. I separated the larger better quality ones, wrapped them in newspaper and laid them in a tray to ripen which should take about 5 or 6 weeks for them to go red. But a quick research stint revealed dozens of recipes for green tomatoes.
