The Stranglers

The Stranglers Album: “Peaches: The Very Best of the Stranglers”

The Stranglers Album: “Peaches: The Very Best of the Stranglers”
Description :
Producers includes: The Stranglers, Martin Rushnet, Alan Winstanley, Hugh Cornwell, Roy Thomas Baker.
Recorded between 1977 & 1990.
Among all of the Stranglers compilations on the market, PEACHES: THE VERY BEST OF THE STRANGLERS is probably the finest. At 20 tracks, PEACHES doesn't skimp on material, packing plenty of the British band's sometimes moody, sometimes boisterous rock onto one disc. The Stranglers rose to prominence during the punk movement, but while their music is characterized by a raw edginess and a flair for crude overtures and entendres, their early style is rooted more in pub rock (with a decidedly 1960s psychedelic flavor, courtesy of the group's knack for Doors-esque keyboards). The band's later sound fits nicely with the British electro-pop scene of the early '80s.
Yet the Stranglers unify these disparate elements into a surprisingly cohesive, distinctive style that they successfully sustained over the years, as their remarkable string of UK hit singles attests. PEACHES collects these hits--including the leering title track, the driving "No More Heroes," the dreamy "Golden Brown," and the enigmatically tender "Strange Little Girl"--alongside a handful of covers, including a revved-up version of Burt Bacharach's "Walk On By" and the Kinks' "All Day and All of the Night." As a career overview and an introduction to the Stranglers, this collection is a high point in the band's catalogue.

- Superb Collection From This Unique Band!

The Stranglers are one of those bands that are hard to describe, they have a sound that is distinctly their own. Part of the punk movement of the seventies, they were more advanced musically and lyrically than most of Britain's punk bands. This superb collection contains such gems as "No More Heroes", "Straighten Out", "All Day And All Of The Night" (remember the original by The Kinks? Well The Stranglers do a great job covering this classic), "96 Tears" (another classic originally a hit for the sixty's group "? And The Mysterians", "Golden Brown", "Dutchess", "Always The Sun", "Skin Deep", and "La Folie" plus more. The only song missing is "All Roads Lead To Rome". The remastering is excellent with crisp highs, increased midrange and extended output. Highly recommended!

- Beware - Contains an Alternate Mix of "Always the Sun"

Not much needs to be said about The Stranglers. They were great in the Hugh Cornwell days. Beware this collection if you're looking for the radio mix of "Always the Sun". The version of it here is the inferior "Sunny Side Up Mix".

- punk (not Punk)

I swear I'd heard of it heard these guys. However, I was very surprised when I looked through all my cataloging of lps and songs on various artists discs that they didn't show up. Then, having read about the song Peaches in a book on the important moments in music history I decided I'd better pick something up by them.

What better than a hits package. There are a couple of them but I'm sure, while not identicle, the better tunes are on both. Can't tell you why I chose this one. That said I like this group. Peaches, the song, had been descibed in the book as the a punk highlight in the summer of 1977. But it is really not punk. The group members may have been and their sometimes juicy lyrics or word choices may be punkish. But if you think Sex Pistols, or earlier Clash as punk, these songs are not. They are good english rock, melodic and easy to sing along with. And hearing them for the first time in 2012 they do not sound dated. This Lp could have released this year and fit in, more in the way that Mumford & Sons and Green Day do.

- good value, good tunes

Overall, this is a good collection of tunes from the Stranglers, packed with over 70 minutes of music, showing that they were more than just another punk band. I'm not crazy about the mediocre covers of "Walk on By" and "All Day and All of the Night," but hearing great tunes like "Golden Brown," "Always the Sun," and my favorite, "Skin Deep" makes this a very satisfying purchase.

- Good 80s stuff

This is a very good cd. i had never heard of the sranglers before a friend shared a track with me. and what can i say? i'm hooked. being a new fan, this album was obviously the one for me to get because it is a collection of their best songs. I really love the tracks "Golden Brown" and "Peaches" and "Always the Sun" and... well every other song. Maybe you've heard the song "All Day and All of the night" I'm not sure if they are the original recorders of this song, but its cover if not. If you are a fan of 80s music (stuff that you'd see on the wedding singer soundtrack) I definitely suggest this album! Good variety too: melodic, upbeat, fantastical, and fun... BUY IT TODAY!
