The Temptations

Disco de The Temptations: “20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection: T”

Disco de The Temptations: “20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection: T”
Descripción (en inglés) :
Compilation producer: Harry Weinger.
Digitally remastered by Suha Gur (Universal Music Studios East).
It's sad, but it must be said: Volume One of the Temptations' entry in the 20TH CENTURY MASTERS series covers 8 years and is an unbelievably tight collection of the group's highest moments. Volume Two covers nearly three full decades and feels a little padded. Of course, the high points are among the highest of the group's entire career, with "Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me)" and "Papa Was A Rollin' Stone" easily among the finest pop songs of the '70s and "Ball of Confusion" and "Psychedelic Shack" not far behind. After the mid '70s, however, when personnel and producer shakeups compounded the general sense of malaise that surrounded Motown in that era, the Temptations were largely adrift, and this 11-song collection only features three post-'75 tunes, the highlight being the funky "Standing on the Top," a cool collaboration with Tempts disciple (and stalwart member Melvin Franklin's nephew) Rick James.

I should probably quit writing these Millennium Series reviews, but it's so infuriating. In hindsight it is obvious what was going to happen. Everyone was complaining about all the great tracks left off the Temptations first Millennium Series release. So six months later MCA releases Vol. 2.

But let's look at this closely. Do you buy both Millennium Series releases or the 2-disc Temptations Anthology? If you go the Millennium route:

1) You save a few bucks.

2) Volume 2 gives you "Stay" from 1998's Phoenix Rising. [This is the only track not to be found on Anthology.]

3) You have 22 songs--including 18 of their 37 Top 40 hits. [Among the missing are the Top Tens "Runaway Child, Running Wild" and "All I Need.]

If you buy Anthology:

1) You spend a couple extra dollars.

2) You get twice as many songs--46 instead of 22.

3) You get all of their Top Tens and 33 of their 37 Top 40 hits.

The Temptations were part of the triple crown of Motown's male vocal groups along with The Miracles and The Four Tops and these songs belong in any serious collector's music library. Just do the math BEFORE you buy.

- backfires for real

A wholly inadequate attempt to chronicle the music of the "Temptations" for the last 30 years. A "collection" of '70's, '80's and '90's "Tempts" songs, this package just recycles the vintage Tempt hits in yet another format. I'm a classic Tempts fan (Ruffin, Kendricks, Paul Williams, Melvin and Otis w/ Dennis later on), but I've listened to them over all these years. Where is "Lady Soul"? Where is "Soul to Soul"? Their '95 Richard Perry produced "For Lovers Only" is a great great album, why isn't anything ("Some Enchanted Evening", "At Last") from it included on this collection? Motown has chosen to keep going to the well over and over to get the same "water" again and again. To put it in this new container doesn't change it one bit. The best of this collection is from the classic "60's" period. The 25 years of music making since '75 is shamelessly shortchanged. The songs from '75-'00 may not be as popular as the classics, but this package purports to be about THAT PERIOD and they should be included in it. Ron Tyson, Ali Woodson, and company deserve better.

- Great appetizer

Everybody knows that the Temptations have enough musical food to feed every person on the continent of Africa. However,if you are looking for the perfect appetizer this is it...most people have the main coarse...stop complaining enjoy the music.
