Vince Neil: “I Cut a Nun’s Head Off With a Chainsaw - Bands Don’t Do That Anymore”Photo: Harrison/Getty Mötley Crüe released their first album of new material in nearly a decade this past summer, but that’s business as usual for singer Vince Neil. “We stop touring and don’t put a record out and everybody says we broke up, and it’s not really true,” Neil insists. “We were just taking a vacation.” That break fully came to an end this year. The veteran glam-metal act celebrated the release of Saints of Los Angeles with the inaugural Crüe Fest, a traveling multi-act hard rock roadshow that also included Sixx A.M., the side-project of Crüe bassist Nikki Sixx (with producer-vocalist James Michael). Crüe Fest 2 is already planned for summer 2009. And last week, Mötley convened again for a special show at the Hollywood Palladium in preparation for a 2009 U.S. arena tour that begins in San Diego on February 2nd. That concert marked the debut of a new support act, the Last Vegas, a band chosen in a nationwide competition sponsored by Guitar Center to open the show every night on tour (along with Hinder and Theory of a Deadman). The Palladium gig also brought the four members of Mötley Crüe back to L.A.’s Sunset Boulevard, where the band notoriously began its career more than two decades before. “We walked down the street with our high heels on — stiletto heels — and dog collars,” Neil remembers with a laugh. “We didn’t have any money, so we looked cheap, but it was good cheap.” Why choose an unknown band to open for the tour? Kiss took us out when we were just playing clubs, and then when Ozzy took us out it really broke Mötley Crüe. Those bands took chances on us. So why not give back and take a chance with a new unknown band? The Last Vegas are young and aggressive, their songs are good and they look good. If you could go back and see Mötley from the early days, how do you think you’d react to them as a new band? I’d probably go, “What the fuck are these guys thinking about, man!” Bands don’t do what we used to do. Bands don’t have the theatrics. We wer

Cream’s Jack Bruce Starts Feud With Led Zeppelin 35 Years Too LatePhoto: Shugerman/Getty Jack Bruce of Cream recently unleashed some harsh words about Led Zeppelin, airing some grievances to the press at a recent award ceremony by saying “Fuck off, Zeppelin, you’re crap.” “Everybody talks about Led Zeppelin, and they played one fucking gig — one fucking lame gig — while Cream did weeks of gigs,” Bruce said in the unprovoked attack. “Fuck off, Zeppelin, you’re crap. You’ve always been crap and you’ll never be anything else. Cream is 10 times the band that Led Zeppelin is.” Bruce was apparently angry that Zeppelin and not Cream (as had been scheduled), became the headliner of the Ahmet Ertegun tribute concert at the O2 Arena in London in December 2007. Bruce later tried to back away from the comments, saying “I was just having some fun with the press gallery, really” but then added a post script to the apology by lambasting Zeppelin some more. “The thing about Zeppelin is that obviously it’s a little bit of jealousy on my part — or more than a little bit — because the audience was created by Cream and Jimi Hendrix…this sort of very large audience…Then Zeppelin came along and had a very easy ride in that way. We were the pioneers and pioneers don’t always get the recognition they deserve, maybe.” As for Led Zeppelin’s decision to tour with a replacement for Robert Plant, Bruce added “Well, I always thought Robert Plant used the wrong kind of fertilizer, anyway, so I think he might be an improvement…I’m just joking.” As for the battle of the guitar gods, “Let’s face it: Jimmy Page ain’t no Eric Clapton, no matter what anybody thinks,” Bruce said. Having Survived Industrial Rock, Ogre Takes on the FutureNivek Ogre, the founder of industrial icons Skinny Puppy who was born Kevin Ogilvie but now just goes by “Ogre,” has been around both literally and figuratively. Born and raised in Canada, his work with Skinny Puppy (as well as KMFDM, Pigface, Ministry, Revolting Cocks and just about every other major band in the genre) took him all around the world before he finally settled in a serene mountain area in suburban Los Angeles. “My head is always my head, and it’s my most dysfunctional tool, but I have a sense of comfort in places that don’t feel like home,” he explains. He’s produced all brands of art and survived heroin addiction and has had an amazingly productive year: he stars in the surreal movie musical Repo! The Genetic Opera and also has a new album from his project OhGr called Devils In My Details. The album, a left-field construction of processed jams and samples, moves further away from the pounding noise of his former bands towards something more abstract without sacrificing Ogre’s trademark theatricality. “We wanted to make the album an immersive experience. For me, records used to be that, but for today’s kids it’s video games, so we crafted a lot of sound design based on jump starts from video games. It’s a very crafted record. You’ve got to turn it up really loud.” “Looking for a reason to do the record became a big deal for us,” adds Mark Walk, the other half of OhGr. “A lot of people make a record just because the label says they can.” Walk created a number of audio-video loops based on images and films in the public domain. “We started jamming while watching these loops and using them as inspiration. We had a clip of Liberace performing this sort of classical lick, so at least part of the record was inspired by the image of his hands playing the keys. It was a different way to make a record, but it felt really natural after a while.” As for his participation in Repo!, it was a dream come true for Ogre. “My fantasy as a kid was to be able to sit in

The Hold Steady’s Craig Finn: “Dylan’s Superhuman”Craig Finn, the singer, guitarist and lyricist for Brooklyn band the Hold Steady, heard plenty of legends about Bob Dylan while growing up in Minnesota. “When you deal with Dylan, there’s a lot of legend, very much by his own design. When people meet celebrities they say, ‘Oh, he’s just a normal guy.’ Dylan’s not a normal guy. He’s superhuman.” Click below for more from Finn’s interview from the current issue, including which Replacement he used to dress like, how he embraced Led Zeppelin late and some of the secrets of the lyrics on Stay Positive. • Q&A: Craig Finn of the Hold Steady [Photo: Lucy Hamblin]

Devo Sue McDonald’s Over Happy Meal Toy Devo are suing McDonald’s after the hamburger giant used the band’s likeness in a Happy Meal toy without permission. Last April, McDonald’s released a bunch of American Idol-themed toys that had little plastic figures dressed up to represent different musical genres. There was Disco Dave, Rockin’ Riley and, the basis of Devo’s lawsuit, New Wave Nigel. Anyone who’s seen Devo’s “Whip It” video will automatically recognize those odd red caps, dubbed “energy domes” by the band, as the same hat that adorns New Wave Nigel’s head. Little did McDonald’s know, however, that the “energy dome” is “copyrighted and trademarked,” according to Devo bassist and creator of the “energy dome” Gerald Casale. According to Casale, “We’re in the midst of suing them… they didn’t ask us anything. Plus, we don’t like McDonald’s, and we don’t like American Idol, so we’re doubly offended.” Making matter worse, New Wave Nigel also dons an orange jumpsuit and sunglasses strikingly similar to the band’s wardrobe at the time, and the plastic figure even has a song that the band claims sounds Devo-esque. Pearl Jam Reveal Bootleg Plan, Hook Up with Verizon Pearl Jam has rolled out their plan to distribute their live concert bootlegs from their U.S. tour, kicking off tonight in West Palm Beach, Florida. As in years past, Pearl Jam will sell MP3 and FLACs of the complete concert two weeks after the show on their website. This time around, though, the band will also allow fans to purchase physical CDs of the concerts which will ship within three weeks of the show date. And “by request from fans who are increasingly accessing their music via their mobile phones,” Pearl Jam will also select three highlights from each concerts and make them available through Verizon’s VCast system. One of the three songs from each concert will be a free download, with fans given the option to purchase the remaining tracks. The songs can then be used as ringtones, ringback songs or just for listening purposes. [Photo: Getty]

News Ticker: Green Day, Regeneration Tour, AC/DC, Big Boi After months of dodging, Green Day finally admitted that they are the Foxboro Hot Tubs. Billie Joe Armstrong revealed that the band got its name from “a place we used to sneak booze and chicks into late at night.” Eighties mainstays the Human League, Dead Or Alive, A Flock of Seagulls and Belinda Carlisle will band their ridiculous hairstyles together for the inaugural Regeneration Tour. The country-crossing affair spans from August 1st to the 29th. AC/DC is currently in the studio with producer Brendan O’Brien working on their first album in eight years says, according to Supersuckers (whose own album has been delayed as their own producer engineers for O’Brien and AC/DC). OutKast’s Big Boi is set to debut his new ballet “big” for the first of six performances tonight at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre. The rapper reportedly also plans to premiere his new solo single “Sir Lucious Leftfoot Saves the Day” to close out the evening.

The Who Prep Covers Album The Who are planning a collection of vintage R&B covers, similar to the Motown and James Brown songs they performed early on in their career. “We’re digging through lots of material and seeing what will work,” says producer T Bone Burnett, who expects to travel to London this fall to begin recording. “There’s an incredible treasury of songs in the mode of what they used to play. Not ‘Heat Wave’ [an early favorite of the band], but ones that people probably haven’t heard of.” Pete Townshend may also write new material for the project. “It might be a combination of both,” Burnett says. “We’re still turning it over.” In other Who news, the band will perform on July 12th in Los Angeles for VH1’s Rock Honors. Scott Weiland Responds to Velvet Revolver’s Overthrow, Recommends Sebastian Bach Scott Weiland has issued a scathing statement in response to yesterday’s non-April Fool’s Joke that Velvet Revolver would continue on without its singer’s services. “I find it humorous that the so called four ‘founding members’ of Velvet Revolver would decide to move on without me after I had already claimed the group dead in the water on March 20 in Glasgow,” Weiland said. Weiland went on to remind everyone that he’s reuniting with Stone Temple Pilots, saying “I choose to look forward to the future and performing with a group of friends I have known my entire life. This also speaks to my commitment to the fans who I feel would much rather watch a group of musicians who enjoy being together as opposed to a handful of discontents who at one time used to call themselves a gang.” In one last parting shot, Weiland comments on the band’s upcoming search for a new lead singer. “Good hunting lads, I think Sebastian Bach would be a fantastic choice.” We personally cast a vote for Axl Rose, but that doesn’t seem likely. Smashing Pumpkins Sue Virgin Records Over Pepsi Promotion The Smashing Pumpkins filed a breach-of-contract lawsuit against Virgin Records after the label used the band’s name in a “Pepsi Stuff” promotion without permission. Billy Corgan and crew are alleging Virgin had no right to involve the band in promotional deals and that the only deal in place with Virgin is the label’s right to sell digital downloads of the band’s songs. In the lawsuit, the Pumpkins say they would “never grant such authority to Virgin, or any other entity” and that the Pepsi deal threatens their “artistic integrity.” Virgin, who has counted Smashing Pumpkins on its roster for seventeen years, have yet to comment on the suit. Foo Fighters Sue Marvel Comics Over X-Men Cartoon It seems like a bad idea to pick a fight with Spider-Man, Wolverine and the rest of the Marvel Universe, but that’s exactly what Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters are doing, as the band is suing the comic book giant for copyright infringement. The band alleges that Marvel used “substantial excerpts” of their songs “Best of You” and “Free Me” as the music for the trailer of the new animated series Wolverine and the X-Men. You can watch the trailer here, and it’s pretty obvious that the Foos are used to soundtrack the cartoon’s preview. The series’ producers First Serve International, Toonz Animation India and First Serve Toonz were also named on the lawsuit, with the Foos’ seeking unspecified damages. We’re guessing the Foo Fighters just blew their chances of being on the soundtrack to The Punisher 2. [Photo: Getty]

News Ticker: Amy Winehouse, White Stripes, Jimmy Page British police have interviewed Amy Winehouse in connection with last month’s video of Winehouse smoking what might be a crack pipe. She has not been arrested. A former Canadian radio host is suing the White Stripes over claims the band used a sample from her radio show in their song “De Stijl” without her permission. Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the guru who famously taught the Beatles in the late ’60s, died Tuesday night. He was believed to be 91. Jimmy Page will sell a 24-foot-long tapestry and five stained glass windows at Sotheby’s on March 20th as a part of a British design auction.

Fall Out Boy to “Wild Things” Author: Oops, Sorry! After completing nearly three-fourths of their current “Young Wild Things” Tour, Fall Out Boy came to a startling realization: The tour’s artwork, inspired by the children’s story Where the Wild Things Are, had infringed on the rights of Maurice Sendak, the book’s author. Each night of the tour, fans saw graphics depicting Pete Wentz and co. as characters from the book — Wentz as main character Max, and Patrick Stump, Andy Hurley and Joe Trohman as the imaginary creatures Max envisions within the story. The graphics were also used on t-shirts and other tour promo, some of which still appears on Fall Out Boy’s site. We’re not sure how that glaring legal problem managed to slip past Fall Out Boy and their handlers, but the band has since abandoned the imagery and posted an apology to Sendak on their official site yesterday, saying, “We have great respect and affection for his book and it was our intent only to pay homage to it, not to infringe any rights.” No word yet on whether or not Sendak has taken, or will take, legal action.

Eddie Vedder Mulls Solo Tour, Uses Surfing Metaphors Is Eddie Vedder planning a solo tour? According to a story in the Los Angeles Times, it’s possible. The Pearl Jam frontman has completed what amounts to his first solo album by way of the soundtrack to the forthcoming Sean Penn film Into the Wild (read our review of the LP here, and watch the video review in today’s New Music Tuesdays report here). The possible tour would have Vedder playing much more intimate venues than he’s used to with Pearl Jam. “If you surf fifty-foot waves all the time, you can’t try too many new things, because fifty-foot waves are kind of life and death,” Vedder, an avid surfer, explained. “Playing big shows is like that. So you want to take on some smaller waves to rework or refine what you do, and then take it back to the big surf.” Hard-core Pearl Jam fans need not worry that Vedder entertaining the idea of a solo jaunt signals the end of the band, however. “We’ve been a group for a long time,” the singer said. “And we will continue to be so, I hope, for a really long time.” The official comment from Vedder’s reps is that he has no official plans to tour alone.
