Years ago, I taped this off of tv, and I've watched this concert a number of times on that worn out old VHS tape. So when I saw this, I thought I'd upgrade to dvd. My poor rating for this dvd has to do not with the performance of Tommy, which is very enjoyable, but the fact that the end of the concert isn't included on the disc.
At the end of the Tommy concert, The Who came out and performed some of their other classics, including some songs from Who's Next. At the end of the main concert, Roger Daltrey says "We're just getting warmed up. We're coming back." And then the dvd ends! What happened to the encore performances? Why not include them here?
Everything else about the dvd is fine, including an interesting "visual commentary" option. The picture is as good as it could have been, given the way it was taped all those years ago, and the sound is clear (which at times is a disadvantage, as the performers were not always pitch perfect, though that's always been part of The Who's charm). A few highlights: Phil Collins shines as the wicked Uncle Ernie, Billy Idol is at his egocentric best as cousin Kevin, and Patti LaBelle screeches her way through a fun take on the Acid Queen. It's just too bad that the end of the concert isn't included.
I recorded this from TV on vcr as well. Just Dug it up. Wow, I notice this is missing some extra tunes they did after Tommy. As, You better you bet, My substitute, Who are you, Behind blue eyes, Won't get fooled again. All done by the 3 remainer members without the other quest early in the video. This part that's not included on this DVD would have rounded this out. Sorry I'll pass on this, and just transfer what I have to my own dvd. I have to edit the TV ads from 89 out. (those are even classics now, Eagle Talon, 21 jump street, AT&T phone booth ad, etc). Thanks
Order for gift. Was OK. Not what he wanted. Looking for "Tommy Live" with additional bonus.
