Fricke’s Picks: Parallel Guitar Universes, British Folk Hero, and Revenge Parallel Guitar Universes There was a wide world of guitars at Eric Clapton’s Crossroads festival in Chicago in July– but not the whole wide world. Altitude (Thirsty Ear), by the duo Groundtruther, is a pair of parallel universes unto itself. On one CD, guitarist Charlie Hunter, drummer Bobby Previte and guest keyboardist John Medeski play miniature pieces of watery, free improvisation. More grounded and thrilling is a second disc on which Hunter — well known for playing a seven-string instrument, not famous enough for what he does with it — rips through the air with superrock fuzz and fusion mettle. Asmodeus (Tzadik), guitarist Marc Ribot’s power-trio setting of John Zorn pieces, is just as furious, a shotgun union of Jimi Hendrix¹s Band of Gypsys, Sonny Sharrock¹s free-blues ecstasy and Zorn’s radical Jewish-music explorations. Then there is the elusive Massacre. Ex-Henry Cow guitarist Fred Frith and bassist Bill Laswell formed the free-rock trio in 1980, then revived it in 1998 with This Heat drummer Charles Hayward. Lonely Heart is live and hairy, mostly recorded at the 2003 Roskilde Festival, where the band opened for — yes — Metallica. All you have to do is ride the lightning. Clapton’s British Folk Hero At Crossroads, when I asked Clapton whom he forgot to invite, he replied, “Bert Jansch. God, the heart of the English folk scene. Why did I not pick up on that one?” Jansch, with John Renbourn, were in turn the twin-guitar heart of Pentangle, a British quintet that, in the late Sixties and early Seventies, made a daring, remarkable folk music of its own. With a quietly powerful rhythm section, drummer Terry Cox and bassist Danny Thompson, and the golden-spear voice of Jacqui McShee, Pentangle fused traditional balladry, modern jazz, raga and the North African fundamentals of American blues. The Time Has Come 1967-1973 (Castle Music) is a deep, captivating four-CD study of their original studio

Vikram Pandit Gets a Write-down, Foreign Capital for His Birthday"I didn't even think Sandy Weill knew I existed." Photo: Photo Illustration: Corbis (pandit), iStockphoto(hat)Yesterday was new Citigroup honcho Vikram Pandit's 51st birthday, and pretty much everyone forgot, since this morning he had to announce the largest quarterly loss in his bank's history. To be sure, the $18.1 billion subprime-mortgage-related write-down is not as much as the $24 billion that was predicted over the weekend, but it was enough that it led to a fourth-quarter loss of $9.83 billion. But there was a silver lining: The bank says it has plans to raise upwards of $12.5 billion through a private securities sale, which includes $6.88 billion from Singapore. They also expect the Kuwait Investment Authority, Alwaleed bin Talal, and even former Citigroup CEO Sanford "Sandy" Weill to kick in with investments. That's "a huge vote of confidence on [Weill's] part," one analyst told Reuters. "I'm surprised to see his name there." We wonder if Pandit is surprised. Maybe today after work, he'll go outside and Weill will be waiting for him in his red convertible. "Me?" Pandit will say. "Yeah, you," Weill will say, and later that night they'll share kisses over birthday cake while the Thompson Twins' "If You Were Here" plays softly in the background. 'year of the dog' - hollywood premiere! well hello hello hello! i just got home a little while ago from covering the red carpet premiere of the latest mike white outing year of the dog which lands in theaters (select cities for now) next friday april 13th (spooky day!) i was thrilled to discover i had my very own spot along the red carpet (yes i had to snap a picture of it!) plus since there was a lot of waiting around time i met some really nice people and overall everyone got along - i was right beside LAist which is one of the best los angeles themed blogs around! there were a bunch of celebs in attendance including drew barrymore, lea thompson, judy reyes, shondrella avery, jack black, ben stiller & wife christine taylor, wilson cruz and of course cast members molly shannon (so adorable in person and way animated - i love her!) laura dern (the one person i had a great question for (about this film vs. INLAND EMPIRE) but alas time grew short by the end), josh pais, amy & zoe schlagel (the cutest twin girls ever who shared the part of 'lizzie') and of course the man of the hour the incredibly talented mike white who wrote the film and also made his directorial debut! everyone talked about him - it's one of those 'when mike calls you simply say yes' type of situations! i had the chance to screen the film last week - i completely loved it - go ahead and read my glowing review! ms. shannon totally deserves an award - i'm gunning for an independent spirit award! finally the truly best part of the evening was meeting lisa marie - she's the white pitbull pictured below - she's two years old and was found on the streets and is now unfortunately deaf from being badly abused - i had my eye on her and when i went to go meet her - ms. lisa laid down immediately and was all 'rub my belly' - i swear she was one of the sweetest dogs i've met in quite some time! she's up for adoption through best friends animal society which is a local animal rescue organization (i would've totally taken her but the one thing is s
