Readers’ Rock List: Oscars’ Best Original SongsPhoto:Caulfield/WireImage Last Friday, in honor of the 81st Academy Awards, we asked our readers to tell us their favorite Best Original Song Oscar winners and nominees. We counted the votes, disqualified the picks that didn’t count (Prince’s “Purple Rain” wasn’t nominated and Jonny Greenwood’s There Will Be Blood was a score) and now bestow the Rock Daily award to Bob Dylan’s “Things Have Changed” from Wonder Boys. Dylan beat out Neil Young, Björk, Elliott Smith, Springsteen and (not as surprisingly) Harry Owens’s “Sweet Leilani” from the 1937 hit Wakiki Wedding. On the Charts: Coldplay’s “Viva” Hangs On to Number One The Big News: For the second consecutive week, Coldplay’s Viva La Vida held off Lil Wayne to grab the top spot. Despite a 66% sales decrease from its debut week, Viva La Vida still sold 249,000 copies as the album edged closer to a million copies sold. Tha Carter III remained at number two, selling another 200,000 copies, while the Camp Rock soundtrack hung around at three for another week. Mötley Crüe’s comeback album Saints of Los Angeles debuted at four with 99,000 units, and Three 6 Mafia’s Last 2 Walk rounded out the top five in its debut week. Debuts: Jacksonville hard-rockers Shinedown and their third album The Sound of Madness came in at eight, Sigur Ros’ Meo suo í eyrum vio spilum endalaust entered at 15 and Fueled by Ramen recruits Cute Is What We Aim For debuted at 21 with their sophomore album Rotation. Further down, RZA/Bobby Digital’s “fun” Digi Snacks got 6,800 parties started on its way to 111 and Alejandro Escovedo’s Real Animal placed at 122. Last Week’s Heroes: No one sold over 700,000 copies this time around, but last week’s heroes still occupied the upper-tier of the charts. The only big drop out of the top ten was the Offspring, who’s Rise & Fall, Rage & Grace fell from 10 to 24. Congratulations to Amy Winehouse, as her Back to Black reached double platinum status stateside. Coroner: Pimp C Died of Accidental Cough Syrup Overdose, Sleep Apnea Los Angeles coroners have determined that a combination of sleep apnea and cough syrup are responsible for the death of UGK’s Pimp C, who was found dead in an L.A. hotel in December. The coroners also ruled that the death was accidental. Sleep apnea is a condition that blocks one’s air passages, causing sufferers to briefly stop breathing while sleeping, while the prescription drug in question, Promethazine/Codeine, is a cough syrup combination that often appears in rap song lyrics (including Three 6 Mafia and UGK’s own “Sippin’ on Some Syrup”). Pimp C was thirty-three. Coldplay Gifts Fans With Pretenders Cover, Thom Yorke to Release Remixes, Jay-Z’s “Gangster” Meets the Real “Godfather” and More With only twelve days to go ’til Christmas, Coldplay has posted an early present on their Web site for their fans: “2000 Miles,” the band’s cover of the Pretenders song. “We love Christmas songs, but every time we try and write one it’s awful,” Chris Martin writes. Maybe Martin could learn a thing or two from the Killers. Thom Yorke will revisit his solo career early next year as he releases three 12′’ singles featuring nine remixes of tracks from his debut album The Eraser. Among the remixers are the Field, Burial, Four Tet and Modeselektor. The seventh annual Ponderosa Stomp is branching out to include conference panels next year. The American music fest will take place April 29th and 30th in New Orleans and feature performances by Ronnie Spector, Roky Erickson and more. To celebrate getting picked up for another season on HBO, or because they’re just overflowing with humor, mock rockers Flight of the Conchords will release a full-length album in April 2008. From Broadway to the Mafia way: After Jay-Z’s American Gangster received the show-tune treatment, now DJ Skee has mashed-up Jigga’s new album with the score from The Godfather.

Rewind: The Week in Rock Daily Kanye West and Amy Winehouse picked up the most Grammy nominations, while the White Stripes nabbed one of the weirdest. Rolling Stone couldn’t resist making some early picks for who will win on Grammy night — and who should win. Tom Petty spoke exclusively to Rolling Stone about his upcoming Super Bowl halftime performance, the long-overdue next Heartbreakers record and staying away from corporate rock — as well as reuniting his pre-Heartbreakers band, Mudcrutch. In response, we broke out photos from the book Runnin’ Down a Dream, which traces the band’s history. Led Zeppelin mania continued as we began the final countdown to the band’s Monday night reunion show in London with an album-by-album guide to every Zep release and bonus excerpts from our cover-story interviews. Rolling Stone hopped on the tour bus with Paramore to find out why Hayley Williams and Co. travel with hunting gear and enough cereal to feed a small nation. Pimp C (real name: Chad Butler) of Grammy-nominated rap duo UGK died in Los Angeles; Bun B, Chamillionaire, Paul Wall and Three 6 Mafia’s DJ Paul remembered their fallen friend.
