Tonic

Disco de Tonic: “Sugar”

Disco de Tonic: “Sugar”
Descripción (en inglés) :
Tonic: Emerson Hart (vocals, acoustic, electric & slide guitars); Jeff Russo
acoustic, electric & slide guitars, mandolin, Mellotron, background vocals);
Dan Lavery (Fender Rhodes piano, Moog bass pedals, bass, background vocals).
Additional personnel: Eve Butler, Gerardo Hilera, Peter Kent, Michele Richards (violin); Matthew Funes, David Stenske (viola); Larry Corbett, Suzie Katayama (cello); Peter Maloney, Joey Waronker (drums); Lenny Castro (percussion).
Recorded at Kingsway, New Orleans, Louisiana; Sound City, Los Angeles, California; House Of Blues Studio, Encino, California.
An oasis in a desert of souring pop bands--that's the best way to describe Tonic's sophomore release, SUGAR. The trio delivers hooks like a prizefighter, and their balance of tension and melody makes for consistently memorable songs. "Knock Down Walls" is an anthem of love and manipulation, as vocalist/guitarist Emerson Hart sings, "you always grab a hold of the ones you can change/just a group of loner zeroes who will play your game."
Tonic's country rock roots shine brightly on the title track, while the emptiness of celebrity worship is played out in "Queen." "Waiting For the Light to Change" is a tender ballad describing the moment where one faces the harsh reality of loneliness. The Beatlesque "Sunflower" has some of Hart's most poetic lyrical moments, such as "when the wind blows I will kiss you like sunshine/stealing pieces from a perfect sky." TONIC effectively uses simple arrangements and incredibly singable melodies, making SUGAR a musical remedy that goes down as sweetly as its name.

- Another Amazing Effort from Tonic

Wow. Tonic has done it again. I didn't think they could write and produce an album as well as Lemon Parade but they did. In fact, this album is even better. I bought the CD the day it came out and I haven't taken it out of my stereo yet. Truly a great album which stands out from all the rest. I promise anyone of any age will love this album and become entranced in the powerful vocals. GET THIS CD!

- One of my favorite albums EVER. A Slam Dunk

This cd didn't leave my cd player for nearly a year. Every single song is solid as a rock. And not one of them sounds the same as the next. Stand out for me is the title track. You know how there are always songs you skip over on cds? Not on this one. Would buy it again and again. Miss you, Tonic.

- Okay, But A Slide From Rock To Pop

If you liked Tonic's debut album "Lemon Parade", you may find "Sugar" too sweet for your tastes. As with a lot of rock bands, such as the Replacements and Everclear, it seems the progression of time takes Tonic further away from its rock beginnings.

Don't get me wrong, this is an enjoyable album, especially if you like hook-laden classic rock pop (and I do). But there is nothing here with the guts of "Wicked Soldier" or "Casual Affair." In fact, the hardest song on the album is the hit "You Wanted More", which is hardly rockin'.

As much as I find the album pleasant, I was looking for something harder and more ambitious considering Tonic's excellent debut. The band's next album will let us all know whether they really can rock or if they've taken the definitive turn up popsong boulevard.

- High doses of Sugar recommended.

Rarely has such a radio friendly band produced work of such consistent quality but make no mistake Tonic are a rare group. Their second record "Sugar" is a magnificent example of slick grooves and restrained ballads that will have you singing and tapping your feet in no time. Indeed the first track "Future says run" will get you straight in the game with its forceful guitars and big backbeat. The trend continues from there with the absolute rock 'n' roll of "Knock Down Walls" and "Stronger than mine" contrasting with sincere and haunting ballads ,"Waiting for the light to change" and "Waltz with me". The playing is tight with plenty of momentum but what really sets Tonic apart from the majority of progressive rockers is the song writing of Emerson Hart who consistently produces memorable hooks combined with simple and engaging lyrics. An excellent album from a band with a big future.

- Tonic Does It Again - It's Actually Possible...

After basically burning out Lemon-Parade in my CD player by listening to it for thousands of hours, I came to the conclusion that even a band as great as Tonic will NEVER EVER be able to follow up such an album.

I'm glad I was wrong.

Sugar is just as good, and in many cases, better then Lemon-Parade. This band does an amazing job with their lyrics, style, and music in general!

This (and Lemon Parade) is one of the only CDs I ever bought that I listen to EVERY TRACK over and over again!

This CD is worth every penny. Just buy it.
