Description
Trapt: Chris Brown (vocals, guitar); Simon Ormandy (guitar); Pete Charell (bass instrument); Aaron "Monty" Montgomery (drums).

Recording information: NRG, North Hollywood, California.

Trapt make good on the combination of nu-metal, post-grunge, and radio-ready emo melodicism that countless bands began appropriating in the mid-2000s. Though their first album was not distinctive enough to move them to the front of the pack, they showed signs of promise by the time of their second full-length from Warner Brothers, 2005's SOMEONE IN CONTROL.

Frontman Chris Brown sings with great feeling here, and though his lyrics may fall at times into predictable emo themes, the muscle and velocity of the rest of the band give things plenty of bite. In fact, Trapt are at their best on tracks like the thunderous "Stand Up," which threads a sinuous melody through a crunching metal progression in a way that recalls early-'90s Metallica. A solid sophomore effort, SOMEONE IN CONTROL should please fans of nu-metal and heavy emo alike.
