- U2 Tries Dance Music
To be honest I never really got the Popmart stage of U2. I'm thinking it was self-parody but maybe it was just too clever for me at the time.
I was getting into electronic music in a big way around the time this came out so it was right up my alley. It's a great dance track, and on subsequent listening it's easy to hear the Elvis rockabilly influence under all the studio tinkering. In terms of opening tracks for albums, it's a real corker.
The remixes here are pretty standard, with the DM Deep Club Mix being the strongest, a heady but orthodox house number with piano chords to match. The Holy Joe B-side forshadows the gritty direction the band would take with How To Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, and it almost merits being on the Pop album itself.
A decent CD single but non-rabid U2 fans may be better looking to iTunes for these.

- a breathy pop-anthem anouncing (loudly) the new (again) U2
This is the single that got me cranking the radio every time it came on. Let's face it, lots of people were dying to here something new after the huge franchise of Zooropa. (album/tour/tour/tour...) This is fresh air, U2 mutating yet again, into a band that can endlessly self-parody and endlessly jibe itself for what it was, and is. "You know you're chewin' bubble gum... can't get enough... luvvy duvvy stuff".
