Kanye West and Amy Winehouse picked up the most Grammy nominations, while the White Stripes nabbed one of the weirdest. Rolling Stone couldn’t resist making some early picks for who will win on Grammy night — and who should win. Tom Petty spoke exclusively to Rolling Stone about his upcoming Super Bowl halftime performance, the long-overdue next Heartbreakers record and staying away from corporate rock — as well as reuniting his pre-Heartbreakers band, Mudcrutch. In response, we broke out photos from the book Runnin’ Down a Dream, which traces the band’s history. Led Zeppelin mania continued as we began the final countdown to the band’s Monday night reunion show in London with an album-by-album guide to every Zep release and bonus excerpts from our cover-story interviews. On the Charts: 3 Doors Down Wind Up at Number One

The Big News: 3 Doors Down, they of “Kryptonite” fame, topped the charts as their eponymous fifth album sold 154,342 copies in its debut week, marking the band’s second consecutive album to reach Number One. UGK rapper Bun B scored the Number Two as his second solo album Il Trill sold 97,597 copies. Nineteen-year-old country singer/Dancing With the Stars contestant Julianne Hough won the bronze with her self-titled debut album, while Frank Sinatra’s Nothing But the Best and last week’s winner Death Cab for Cutie’s Narrow Stairs rounded out the top five. Debuts: Jesse McCartney’s Departure entered at 14, Donna Summer’s first album in 17 years Crayons appropriately debuted at 17 and Green Day offshoot the Foxboro Hot Tubs bowed at 21 with Stop Drop & Roll! On the indie front, Mates of State’s Re-Arrange Us took 140 while Islands’ Arm’s Way just snuck in at 200. Finally, Scarlett Johansson’s Tom Waits tribute disc Anywhere I Lay My Head scored 126th place. Last Week’s Heroes: Outside of Death Cab and the Chairman of the Board, Jason Mraz’s We Sing We Dance We Steal Things fell three to 11 and Duffy’s Rockferry dropped from four to eight. Critic’s Picks: Christian Hoard’s Favorite Albums That Didn’t Make the RS Top 50

(You can find Rolling Stone’s 50 Best Albums of the Year here, and Top 100 Singles of the Year here.) 1. Lil Wayne Tha Carter III (Bootleg) This year came and went without Lil Wayne releasing a proper LP, but thanks to the Internet, there was plenty of evidence to back his claim that he’s the best rapper alive. This leaked batch of songs finds Weezy tossing out big-beat pleasures (the Kanye-produced “Did It Before”), referencing Ramadan and Angela Lansbury, and indulging his weird side on “I Feel Like Dying,” a remarkable, very eerie homage to weed. Massively entertaining — and another reason to look forward to the real Carter III. 2. Dizzee Rascal Maths + English (Beggars/xl) On his first two albums, this London MC made hip-hop as tense and action-packed as a John Woo movie. This time he adds some brighter, more accessible moments, alternating dense electro beats and frantic, slang-strewn rhymes with popwise cameos from UGK and Lily Allen. Even better, he pulls it off while managing to sound like no one but himself. 3. Balkan Beat Box Nu Med (Jdub) Killer left-field hip-hop. Helmed by two Israeli expats, this New York band makes beat-centric jams that evoke a strange and wonderful party halfway around the world. Their second album overflows with snatches of klezmer and Gypsy swing, with Ori Kaplan’s sax lines serving as hooks. 4. R. Kelly Double Up (Jive) Say what you like about his misdeeds, dude’s an expert record maker. To the surprise of no one, he still sounds horny as hell, as evidenced by creepy-seductive cuts like “Sex Planet.” There are also excellent club jams, a generic if heartfelt Virginia Tech tribute and “Real Talk,” which borrows the MO of “Trapped in the Closet” for a rant that’s totally indulgent and damn near mesmerizing. 5. Clinic Visitations (Domino) On their fourth album, these minimalist Brits fleshed out their usual spate of distinct, expertly rendered atmospherics with pumped-up tempos and skronked-up guitars. Metallica Deny Lawsuit Rumor, UGK Top Billboard Chart, Radiohead Push New LP to 2008

Contrary to reports they were returning to their lawsuit-happy, Napster-killing ways, Metallica are not suing the video games “Guitar Hero 3” and “Rock Band” for featuring their …And Justice For All song “One.” A spokesperson for the band tells us that the band has licensed the song to the game makers and look forward to it appearing in both titles. Houston rap duo UGK’s Underground Kingz debuted atop the Billboard charts, as their first album since 2001 sold 160,000 copies. On the strength of the single “Shawnty,” Plies’ Real Testament entered the chart at number two. On the indie front, Okkervil River made their Billboard 200 debut at number 62 with The Stage Names. Radiohead will not be putting out a new album this year; the band’s PR firm says signing to a new label and properly promoting the album will push the release date to 2008. Michael Jackson is being sued to the tune of $113,000 for not paying one of the law firms that helped him out when he battled child-molestation allegations. With the money they’re saving after canceling John From Cincinnati, HBO will release a soundtrack for their meandering comedy series Entourage. Cold War Kids, Gnarls Barkley and series star Saigon are among the artists on the tracklist, which mysteriously snubs the show’s theme song, Jane’s Addiction’s “Superhero.”
