Important Oaxacan Sculture Displayed in Chicago Museum388896 04: The dios murciElago sculpture is seen May 5, 2001 at the Mexican Fine Arts Center Museum in Chicago. The seven-foot-tall and 1,100-year-old bat god, or dios murciElago, as the piece is known in Spanish, was unearthed 11 years ago by a man gardening in his back yard in a suburb of Mexico City. In all, more than 200 terra cotta pieces were found. The mythic figure was the most important god among the indigenous Zapotecs from the Oaxaca region of southern Mexico and is one of the few large-scale depictions of a human with a bat's head, claws and feet.
