Following last weekend’s Oscars ceremony, our readers lamented Sean Penn’s win over Mickey Rourke, argued whether Slumdog Millionaire was deserving of its dominant performance and even played the role of Red Carpet Fashion Police. Yet, it was TheVM who took home the Academy Award for Best Comment when he said: Some of you seem to be under the impression that Oscar night is about films. It isn’t. It is simply a mechanism for Hollywood to do what it enjoys more than any other single thing in the whole world…self-congratulate. Does your annual workplace Christmas party serve any nobler purpose? Did you get this emotionally involved in who won Accountant of the Year? It sounds trite, but if you really want to celebrate film, go to more of them, buy more of them, and for god-sakes MAKE more of them. Excellent advice, VM. We expect to see you in line for Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience this weekend. As for the rest of you, just don’t go to any of the films Peter Travers put in his Scumbucket.

Madonna Names New Album “Licorice,” Swipes Song Title From 50 Cent Madonna’s new album, the last in her long tenure at Warner Bros., will be named Licorice (which helps explain why the conference room where she premiered tracks for her label earlier this week was decked out in a candy motif). The news broke today on Sirius Satellite radio show “OutQ,” which also aired two songs from the album, one called “Candy Shop” (we imagine 50 Cent has already called his lawyers from Croatia) which features Pharrell, and “The Beat Goes On” which features Kanye West. As we reported yesterday, the album, which is due out in late April, will also unearth the long-unreleased “The Devil Wouldn’t Recognize You.” Since this is the Material Girl’s last album of original material with WB before her massive ten-year contract with Artist Nation kicks in, Madonna could’ve just released the dreaded “contractual obligation” record, but by employing the Neptunes’ Pharrell, Timbaland, Justin Timberlake, Akon, Danja and many more, it looks like she’ll be leaving her former employer with a tasty chart-topping gift.
