Vetiver

Vetiver ist eigentlich ein Süßgras aus dem südlichen Indien, dessen Öl eine heilende Wirkung besitzt. Süßlich ist auch die Musik der gleichnamigen Band, die sich mit folkigen Klängen auch außerhalb ihres Einzugsgebietes San Francisco einen Namen macht. Kopf der Band ist der in Virginia geborene Andy Cabic, der in den 90er Jahren als Sänger und Gitarrist von The Raymond Brake aktiv war. Nach zwei Alben lösen die sich auf und Cabic zieht nach Kalifornien.
In San Francisco entsteht um die Jahrtausendwende eine lebendige Neo-Folk-Szene, der unter anderen Devendra Banhart und Joanna Newsom angehören. Mit wechselnden Besetzungen reisen sie durchs Land und treten in verschiedenen Combos auf. Irgendwann in dieser Zeit entstehen auch Vetiver und ihr selbstbetiteltes Debütalbum. Am 30.5.2005 treten Vetiver zum ersten Mal in der Manufaktur auf. Damals noch mit Devendra Banhart als Sideman. Es war ein sensationelles Konzert.


La Luz

Die vier Damen von La Luz erinnern an den Surf-Rock der 1950er/1960er und sein Kurzzeitrevival rund um Pulp Fiction. Einflüsse von Dick Dale, The Shadows, The Ventures, Santo & Johnny und immer wieder Link Wray, der bereits 1958 "The Swag" aufdrehte, bilden die Basis für die Musik von La Luz. Besonders Shana Cleveland, Sängerin und Gitarristin der Band, zeigt sich von Wray beeinflusst. Um ihre schummrigen Riffs winden sich Abbey Blackwells Bassläufe, Marian Li Pinos kristallklare Cymbals und Alice Sandahls Orgel. Gemeinsam schaffen die vier aus Seattle stammenden Musikerinnen eine dämmrige Atmosphäre. Spöttisch verspielt brechen sie Hoffnung, Sehnsucht und Budenzauber mit Verlust und Herzschmerz. Ihr Manufaktur Konzert vom letzten Jahr war eine Offenbarung.

Vetiver is what Andy Cabic has been calling his songs and recordings since 2003. The touring band and musicians Cabic has recorded with over the years are ever changing, though many friends and players have stayed over the course of albums and tours. In his own words, Cabic says of Spring 2015’s ‘Complete Strangers’; “The songs on Complete Strangers bear some resemblance to the album’s title. They share things in common but come from different places, different times. “Stranger Still” is an anthem for insomniacs, illuminating the hours when the world exceeds our grasp. “From Now On” rings out some emotional tinnitus, the moment a night runs away from you, when freedoms turn into responsibilities. I’m still figuring the album out. It feels like someone I’ve just met yet known for a long time.”

With front man Andy Cabic having wrapped up a brief European tour of duo shows with Devendra Banhart, Vetiver are pleased to announce a lengthy run of European headline shows in September and October. These dates come in support of the band’s new release Complete Strangers, which Uncut calls 'a laidback gem... unforced, liquid in its forward movement and refreshingly free of pretense or irony'.

Cabic says: 'Vetiver is what I’ve been calling my songs and recordings since about 2003 or so. I live in San Francisco, have since 1998. My touring band and the musicians I’ve recorded with over the years are always changing, though many friends and players have stayed with me over albums and tours. The one constant has been Thom Monahan who has engineered and co-produced every Vetiver album. Thom lives in LA, where most of Complete Strangers was recorded.

'The album came together slowly over demos at my home in San Francisco and quick trips to LA, continuing on with Thom at his studio. It moved in fits and starts for a couple years. Once we had the basic arrangements we jumped in the studio with Bart Davenport, Gabe Noel and Josh Adams for a few days to put down rhythm tracks. That’s when the album really took shape. Thom & I fleshed everything out with a few more musicians in San Francisco and LA, and eventually Complete Strangers arrived.'
