Review - AMG :
The first single from Weezer's self-titled debut is the track that broke down the walls for nerd rock. With simple and relatively nonsensical lyrics about destroying a sweater, band leader Rivers Cuomo leads the California quartet through a quickly building rock tune that is humorous, powerful, and insanely catchy. Memorable backup vocals and an unforgettable hook propel "Undone (The Sweater Song)" into the stratosphere and leave no questions as to why it was one of the most popular songs of the '90s. In addition to the obvious hit are a handful of less well-known, but equally effective, rockers. "Mykel & Carli" is a poppy but also heartfelt song dedicated to the leaders of the group's fan club who were victims of an untimely death. "Suzanne" is a swinging love song that shows Cuomo's ability to write a smart and honest ode to the perfect girl, and the closing "Sweet Adeline" is another brief rarity that isn't necessary but completes a nice package. Weezer rarely writes a song that doesn't work well, and these are no exception, with some of the lesser-known tracks ending up to be even better than the well-known material. ~ Peter J.
