George Michael to Pen Autobiography, Ryan Adams Goes YouTubing, Pete Doherty Plans Solo Album and More Wham! singer and tabloid magnet George Michael has agreed to write a “no-holds-barred” autobiography for HarperCollins. The bio, scheduled to hit bookstores in August 2009, will give in-depth insight into Michael’s personal and professional life. Judging by his recent cameo on Extras, we anticipate the tome will be at least as funny as the Slash biography. Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five, LL Cool J and Common will be among the many rappers featured in photographs at the Smithsonian’s “Recognize! Hip-Hop and Contemporary Portraiture” exhibition, which will open on February 8th at the museum’s National Portrait Gallery. After a quiet end to 2007, Ryan Adams has taken to YouTube to get all his pent-up crazy out. Under the name D. R. Adams, the singer posts videos advertising a fake new album, dons a werewolf costume and does a pretty good Neil Young impression as he sings a new song called “Like Yesterday.” Babyshambles frontman Pete Doherty revealed that his long-delayed solo album will be released later this year. Doherty began recording the album in early 2007, but was delayed because of Doherty’s Babyshambles obligations and busy rehab schedule. Rather than fighting to regain custody of her children, Britney Spears might have another solution: Make new children. Spears and paparazzi friend Adnan Ghalib were seen shopping for home pregnancy tests during one of Spears’ many voyages to Rite Aid.

Eddie Vedder, Flaming Lips, Roger Waters Lead Long Short List of Oscar Hopefuls The committee that hands out Oscars has narrowed down a year’s worth of film soundtracks and end-credit music into a fifty-nine track “short list” of songs that will be eligible for Best Original Song at the 80th Academy Awards. Eddie Vedder, who contributed solo tracks to the Sean Penn film Into the Wild, and Sondre Lerche, who recorded the Dan in Real Life soundtrack, both have three songs on the list. Vedder will most likely get some definite Oscar nod love, as his “Guaranteed” was nominated for Best Song at the Golden Globes this morning (he’s also up for Best Original Score at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s January 13th ceremony). August Rush leads all films with four potential nominations, with John Legend’s “Someday” the favorite of that bunch. Other interesting inclusions: Roger Waters’ “Hello (I Love You),” which we’re assuming is not the Doors’ song (original music only is considered) from The Last Mimzy, plus there’s the Flaming Lips’ oddball “I Was Zapped by the Super Lucky Rainbow” from Good Luck Chuck and “The Tale of the Horny Frog” from The Heartbreak Kid, and Rufus Wainwright’s “Another Believer” from Meet the Robinsons. Fountains of Wayne’s Adam Schlesinger will once again vie for an Oscar statuette, as two of his Wham!-inspired contributions to Music and Lyrics are on the short list. Schlesinger almost took home the Academy Award in 1997 for penning the song “That Thing You Do!” from the film of the same name, but Madonna’s “You Must Love Me” from Evita pulled an upset victory. The upcoming Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story also had three songs on the list, meaning that it’s likely John C. Reilly will have to appear as Cox to perform in front of millions of people Oscar night. So how does the Academy pick five finalists from this enormous list? The whole

R.E.M. Nearly Done With New Album, Lil’ Kim Pulled Over in NYC, B.I.G. Role Still Open for Casting Recent Rock and Roll Hall of Famers R.E.M. are “two-thirds to three-quarters” done recording their new album. The band has been hard at work in Dublin working on the “guitar-dominated, hard-rocking” record, with hopes that it will hit music stores, whatever those are, by Spring 2008. To pad the wait, as we already told you, the Georgia band will release the CD/DVD R.E.M. Live, a recording of a 2005 Dublin concert, on October 16th. Tired of losing street cred to Foxy Brown, Lil’ Kim was pulled over in New York City yesterday for driving a Lamborghini around town without license plates. After being stopped, the NYPD also discovered Kim forgot her driver’s license. Thankfully, her lawyer came to the rescue to drive his client and her car away from the scene. Despite having both a number-one hit and the required roundness, “Beautiful Girls” singer Sean Kingston has not been cast to star as the Notorious B.I.G. in the late rapper’s biopic. While Kingston has expressed a desire to play Biggie in Notorious (which we’re pretty sure won’t be a remake of the Alfred Hitchcock film), producer Wayne Barrow insists that the role of B.I.G. is still open for casting. Kings of Leon hope to re-enter the studio sometime around Valentine’s Day to start work on their fourth album. The band, surprised by the success of their recent release Because of the Times, tell XFM that “this is gonna be like a Wham! album.” PJ Harvey has announced two live dates: October 10th at New York’s Beacon Theatre and October 15th at Los Angeles’ Orpheum. Harvey’s new album, White Chalk, is due September 25th.
