Kaki King’s Guide to Dave Grohl’s Rock Star ClichesKaki King spent quality time with the Foo Fighters while on tour with them in Australia (she also played on the band’s last record Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace), which gave her particular insight into Dave Grohl’s cheesy rock moves. While conversing with RollingStone.com’s Pete Maiden at the Outside Lands festival this weekend, she broke down the three moves you’ll see at every Foo Fighters show. Click above for her breakdowns of the moves, plus her animated examples and a few clips of Grohl in action. Wilco Plan Spring ‘09 Release For More-Sculpted New AlbumWilco are eyeing a Spring 2009 release for their next album, Jeff Tweedy told an Albany, New York radio station. Whereas their last album Sky Blue Sky was recorded under almost jam-session circumstances, Tweedy says the band will “allow ourselves a little bit more leeway in terms of sculpting the sound in the studio and doing overdubs and using the studio as another instrument. Last time around, it was more of a document.” Wilco are already performing a pair of new songs live: “One Wing,” which is reportedly reminiscent of Sky Blue closer “On and On and On,” and the looser, riff-driven “Sunny Feeling.” While Tweedy said following the release of Sky Blue Sky that those studio sessions resulted in a number of unfinished songs, it’s unclear whether those tunes will be the basis for the band’s seventh album.

News Ticker: Outside Lands Fest, Jimi Hendrix, Coldplay, John Lennon Lupe Fiasco, the Black Keys, Liars and Kaki King are among the performers that have been added to the inaugural Outside Lands Festival in San Francisco. The fest, to be held August 22-24, already boasts headliners Radiohead, Beck, Wilco, Ben Harper and more. Vivid Video, proud sellers of sex tapes starring Kim Kardashian and Pamela Anderson, are getting set to release a video that supposedly features Jimi Hendrix cavorting with two brunettes. Critics have dismissed the man in the grainy video (selling for $39.95) is Hendrix, while two former lovers of the rocker insist it’s Jimi. As promised, Coldplay are now allowing fans to download the song “Violet Hill,” the first single from the band’s Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends for free free one week. If you don’t want to submit your email info, you can also listen at the band’s MySpace page. John Lennon’s handwritten lyrics for “Give Peace a Chance” will hit Christie’s auction block in July. The lyrics are expected to retrieve between an estimated four and six hundred thousand dollars. [Photo: Getty]

Dave Matthews Band, Wilco Spice Up New Orleans Jazz FestPhoto: Diamond/Getty “New Orleans is the soul of America,” Gil Cerezo of Kinky declared. The dance rock band from Monterey, Mexico, was onstage and finishing up the first weekend of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival presented by Shell in exhilarating fashion, merging Wall of Voodoo’s “Mexican Radio” with their own. This year marks the 40th anniversary of Jazz Fest, a two-weekend-long celebration of what festival producer Quint Davis refers to as “the heritage of jazz.” This weekend, th

Wilco Get Experimental On June Album: Update Plus Early Track ListPhoto: Jeff Sciortino In Rolling Stone’s Spring Album Preview, Jeff Tweedy says Wilco’s country-tinged album, due in June, is their best yet. “We wanted to go in there with more of an eye for sculpting something sonically,” he says. The group also confirmed that the album’s closing track, “You and I,” will feature Canadian songstress Feist on vocals. Today Wilco took to their official Website to tell fans they’ve spent the past few weeks in Valencia, California, mixing the disc. The band adds, “Here’s a list of song titles spied on the reels — note this is not necessarily complete and not in sequence:” “Deeper Down” “Conscript (aka I’ll Fight)” “One Wing” “Solitaire” “Wilco (the song)” “Country Disappeared” “Everlasting” “Bull Black Nova” “Sonny Feeling” “You and I” You read that right. As of right now, there is a song called “Wilco (the song)” on the album. How “Bad Company” of them. As we reported in the Spring Album preview, the theme song of sorts contains the chorus “Wilco will love you.” The album’s experimentation is anchored once again by Tweedy’s sly, insightful and often heartbreaking lyrics. “Deeper Down” opens with “By the end of the bout, he was punched out, fists capsized, muscles shouting,” while “My Country Disappeared” explores America’s “crushed cities,” concluding “There’s nothing left here.” For much more on the upcoming Wilco album, and 45 more of the biggest releases on the way, check out our Spring Music Preview: • Spring Music Preview: Inside 45 of the Year’s Biggest Albums

Report: Beastie Boys, Jane’s Addiction, Depeche Mode, Kings of Leon Set for LollapaloozaPhoto: The Beastie Boys, Jane’s Addiction, Depeche Mode and Kings of Leon are among the bands that will reportedly headline this year’s Lollapalooza Festival, taking place August 7-9th at Chicago’s Grant Park. Multiple sources confirmed to the Chicago Tribune’s Turn It Up blog that Jane’s, Depeche and the Beasties would perform at the event, while Billboard added the Kings of Leon to the list. The entire lineup will be officially announced in April. Reps for C3 Productions told Rock Daily last week that the rumored headliners were not confirmed just yet, but that’s not exactly a denial either. As per Lollapalooza tradition, two more marquee acts will likely join the four already announced. If the rumors are right, the festival has once again tapped into its late-’80s/early-’90s roots by signing three headliners that were all around when the festival first began in 1991. The reunited Jane’s Addiction’s involvement in Lollapalooza seemed all but a guarantee, considering Perry Farrell’s role in establishing the festival and the band’s suspicious lack of Chicago dates when their joint tour with the Nine Inch Nails rolls into the Windy City. Similarly, in those Depeche Mode tour dates we revealed last week, there was a convenient week-long gap between stops in New York and Seattle in early August. And the Beasties have already been confirmed for Bonnaroo, so they’re evidently traveling the festival circuit. Last year’s Lollapalooza featured Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails, Rage Against the Machine, Wilco, the Raconteurs and Kanye West. So how does this year compare so far? Leave your criticism — and suggestions for who should round out the lineup — in our comments. Wilco Add Spring ‘08 Tour Dates, Rolling Stones Make Solo News, Bonnaroo Date Confirmed Having already pledged his allegiance to Barack Obama, Jeff Tweedy will rejoin his Wilco mates for a two-week tour of the States in February/March 2008. The band will play Cleveland, Philadelphia and New Haven, CT before heading down for a week in the southern states. Check the full dates after the jump. Two long-unreleased Keith Richards songs will finally hit eardrums on December 11th when iTunes makes available Richards’ versions of Chuck Berry’s “Run Rudolph Run,” originally recorded in 1979, and a cover of Toots & the Maytals’ “Pressure Drop” from 2003. iTunes is also in talks to acquire Radiohead’s In Rainbows, a move that would be a thaw in the icy relationship between the band and the music service (Radiohead refuse to sell their songs individually). In other Rolling Stones news, Ronnie Wood is looking to collaborate with South Carolina’s Band of Horses after hearing the band perform on Jools Holland. Band of Horses also perform Wood’s “Act Together” in concert. The seventh annual Bonnaroo festival will place on June 12th to 15th, 2008, in Manchester, Tennessee. Whether or not Led Zeppelin and Metallica will be performing remains unknown — but unlikely. Is Jay-Z on his way out of his CEO seat at Def Jam? According to reports, with Jigga’s contract expiring at the end of the month, the rapper demanded more money than Universal Music was willing to offer, given the current climate in the music industry. Wilco Tour Dates: February 22 Cleveland, OH - Lakewood Civic Auditorium February 23 Philadelphia, PA - Tower Theatre February 24 New Haven, CT - Schubert Theater March 2 Nashville, TN - Ryman Auditorium March 3 Mobile, AL - Mobile Civic Center March 4 New Orleans, LA - Tipitina’s March 5 New Orleans, LA - Tipitina’s March 7 Houston, TX - Verizon Theater March 8 Tulsa, OK - Cain’s Ballroom March 9 Des Moines, IA - Val Air Ballroom

New Orleans Jazz Fest Rocks Out With Dave Matthews, Wilco, Kings of LeonPhoto: Getty The lineup for next year’s New Orleans Jazz & Heritage festival emphasizes artists that are decidedly not jazzy. Dave Matthews, Wilco, Kings Of Leon, Aretha Franklin and many more will take part in the event, to be held the weekends of April 24-26th and April 30-May 3rd at the city’s Fair Grounds Race Course. Not exactly Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Sun Ra, but the lineup is still pretty awesome for a jazz fest. Spoon, the Drive-by Truckers with Booker T. Jones, Erykah Badu, Bonnie Raitt, Ben Harper and many more help fill out the lineup. Things make a lot more sense on the Heritage side of things, with Wynton Marsalis, Dr. John, Allen Toussaint and the Neville Brothers all representing their home city. If the lineup seems more star-studded than in years past, it’s because the festival is celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2009. Election Forces Congress’ Rock Band To Split UpWhile the music world celebrates Barack Obama’s win, the Democratic domination in Tuesday’s election has led to the demise of Washington D.C.’s most powerful band. The Second Amendments, comprised of five members of the House of Representatives, learned that three of their five members would not return to Congress following the election. Nevada keyboardist/Republican Jon Porter lost his re-election bid, while bassist Dave Whedon of Florida retired. Drummer Kenny Hulshof, a Republican from Missouri, also left Congress, and his planned replacement, Bill Sali of Idaho, was voted out of office. What’s left of the band, which specialized in playing rock classics, is guitarist Thaddeus McCotter of Michigan and singer Collin Peterson from Minnesota and the band’s lone Democrat. However, the band might be restocked with all new members/representatives, including New York democratic representative John Hall, who was a member of the 70s group Orleans. Smoking Section: Jack Johnson on the Beach, Midlake in the Studio and Jimmie Dale Gilmore on Stage In December, the Smoking Section winged it out to Santa Barbara to hang out with Jack Johnson. Sitting on the rocky coastline with a fat spliff in our mitts watching Johnson shred massive swells was the perfect opportunity to reflect on the wild ride that was 2007. We witnessed amazing performances — Lucinda Williams‘ five-night stand in Manhattan, Stevie Wonder at the Garden, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in the Hamptons, Pearl Jam in Chicago, Wilco at Bonnaroo, The Killers in London and the Foo Fighters in a Vegas hotel room (sadly, we missed Dave Grohl’s “New Year’s Eve Disco Party” in L.A.). We moved into Kid Rock’s Malibu bachelor pad for a few days, tore up Paris with Ben Harper, guzzled absinthe at Marilyn Manson’s house and embraced our inner player, cocktailing with Snoop, strip-clubbing with Kanye and l’chaim-ing Jay-Z. It all poured sweet and clear — it was a very good year. * * * * If the SS had one regret from ‘07, it was that we were never in the same city as Midlake. The Denton, Texas, fivesome awed us with the mellow explorations of The Trials of Van Occupanther, and we’re happy to report that they’re home, taking their sweet-ass time on the follow-up. “It will be called The Courage of Others,” reports singer Tim Smith. “I think it will sound darker — not dark like Sabbath, but a little more minor-key.” Whereas Van Occupanther was recorded in their living room (”That was tough, because of roommates”), Midlake now occupy their own studio in Denton, with families and dogs waiting at home. “We’ve been going in at 8 a.m. and we’re done by 5,” says Smith, whose songwriting has been influenced, most recently, by No Other, the mysterioso 1974 solo gem from Gene Clark of the The Byrds. “We were jammin’ pretty hard this morning,” Smith says. “We said to ourselves, ‘No other rock band does this at 9:30 i

Wilco to Play Their “Complete” Catalog Over Five Nights, Quiet Riot Singer’s Death Ruled Overdose, More Wilco will “attempt the complete Wilco” during a five-night stint in their Chicago hometown, frontman Jeff Tweedy told Billboard. “We’ll try to clear out the dusty corners of the catalog that we haven’t attended to in a while,” he added. The band will play the Riviera Theatre February 15-16 and 18-20 before heading out on a short spring tour in the Northeast and Southern states. The death of Quiet Riot singer Kevin Dubrow has been ruled an accidental cocaine overdose by Nevada’s Clark County Coroner based on toxicology results that arrived yesterday. Dubrow was found dead in his Las Vegas home last month. The Mars Volta will hit the road in January to promote their fourth album, The Bedlam in Goliath, out January 29th. Marilyn Manson has also announced additional dates on his Eat Me, Drink Me tour for early next year. Dates for both bands after the jump. A new study by RZO accountants Bill Zysblat and Joe Rascoff has concluded that U.S. musicians will benefit from overseas touring thanks to the weakening value of the dollar. The firm, which has calculated tour finances for huge acts from the Rolling Stones to the Police, estimates “a ticket two years ago that was EUR100 got the band $100. Today that same ticket gets the band $147,” Zysblat says. He also predicts that while U.S. bands may start spending more time overseas, this could mean less time on U.S. soil by foreign acts. Just in time for the holiday season, R. Kelly is releasing a deluxe package version of his Trapped in the Closet DVD today which features all twenty-four installments of the exaggerated drama. Among the extra features are running commentary from Kelly, a DVD trivia game and live performances of several chapters. And there’s more: Kelly, who’s currently on tour and awaiting another hearing next week in his child-porn trial, is also launching trappedintheclosetmerchandise.com to sell shirts with the faces of Closet’s chara
