Readers’ Rock List: Animal BandsRock Daily is amped to be hitting the SXSW festival later this week, where we’ll surely be encountering dozens of bands named after animals. So we dedicated the Weekend Rock List to all the Animal Bands that looked to wildlife for inspiration. To avoid a landslide, bugs — and thus the Beatles — were banned. With the Fab Four out, our readers voted Animal Collective as the king of the rock jungle, thanks to their new Merriweather Post Pavilion. The Collective edged out Eagles, Animals and many more furry and feathered bands. To see if your favorite Animal Band made it, check the Readers’ List below: 1. Animal Collective 2. Eagles 3. The Animals 4. Fleet Foxes 5. Grizzly Bear 6. Modest Mouse 7. Super Furry Animals 8. Cat Power 9. Panda Bear 10. Wolfmother 11. The Monkees 12. Def Leppard 13. Steppenwolf 14. Wolf Parade 15. Hype Monitor: Sunset Rubdown, Target Market, Baby ShakesPhoto by David HorvitzThe Band: Sunset Rubdown The Buzz: A side project of Spencer Krug from the equally buzzy Canadian indie rock band Wolf Parade, Sunset Rubdown write weird, wobbly rock songs that turn classic rock inside-out, writing big, guitar-driven songs full of yelps and hollers. Listen If: You’re tired of waiting for the new Arcade Fire record, or you have a thing for vocalists who sound perched on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Key Track: “Idiot Heart,” a taut and tense number buil

Grunge Forefathers Green River Reunite to Salute Sub Pop’s 20th Anniversary With Nostalgic Noise Grunge godfathers Green River played with their original lineup for the first time in 20 years last night, lacking none of the gut-clenching angst that influenced some of modern rock’s most revered musicians. Featuring members of Pearl Jam (bassist Jeff Ament and guitarist Stone Gossard) and Mudhoney (singer Mark Arm and guitarist Steve Turner) plus third guitarist Bruce Fairweather (later of Mother Love Bone and Love Battery) and drummer Alex Vincent, the band pre-headlined SP20, a two-day festival celebrating indie label Sub Pop’s 20th anniversary. It was around dusk at Redmond, Washington’s Marymoor Park when they took the stage; without pause Arm screamed into “Come on Down” and stayed full-throttle for the next 40 minutes. Though the set was the weekend’s most anticipated, the several thousand in the crowd were initially hesitant. After the first few numbers — and the first crowd surfer, a kid no older than 15 — no further convincing was necessary. Gossard and Fairweather shared a mike for backing vocals and Arm was especially amped, slithering and wailing Iggy Pop-like, his between-song banter littered with inside jokes. For set-closer “Ain’t Nothing to Do,” Vincent abandoned his kit and stage-dove into the crowd. By the time he floated back to the stage, the rest of the band had emerged with boxes of Green River T-shirts that they flung into the audience. On the front it read “Green River: Death on Ten Legs,” and printed on the back in block lettering: “Ride the Fucking Six Pack.” The Sub Pop anniversary fest also featured an array of acts who’ve been associated with the label over the course of its financially checkered 20-year history, including the Vaselines (who played their first U.S. shows in New York a few days prior), Mudhoney, Iron and Wine, Fleet Foxes, Flight of the Conchords, Foals, Wolf Parade and Les Thugs. On the Charts: Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida” Continues Big Sales Trend The Big News: As predicted, Coldplay’s Viva La Vida cruised to the top, selling 722,000 copies in its debut week. Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter III followed up a million-selling week by placing second with 308,000 copies, a 69% sales drop. Still, the big weeks by Coldplay and Weezy represent only the second time in Soundscan history that two different albums had sales over 700,000 in consecutive weeks. The feat was last accomplished in May 2000, when Britney Spears’ Oops… I Did It Again and Eminem’s The Marshall Mathers LP both sold over a million in their debut weeks. Rounding out the top five, the soundtrack for Camp Rock came in at three, NOW 28 took four and Plies’ Definition of Real bowed at five. Debuts: It’s not quite a debut, but the reissue of Rihanna’s Good Girl Gone Bad helped the album jump from 124 to seven. A trifecta of debuts claimed the 9-10-11 spots, with Katy Perry’s One of the Boys, the Offspring’s Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace and Judas Priest’s Nostradamus all shifting units in the 40Ks. On the indie front, Wolf Parade’s At Mount Zoomer claimed 46 despite an early leak and the Hold Steady’s Stay Positive entered at 170 in its first week of digital-only release. Last Week’s Heroes: Despite the big decrease in sales, Lil Wayne was still a hero, as the 308,000 he sold in his second week would definitely claim the number one slot any other non-Coldplay week. With six new entries in this week’s top eleven, there was a lot of shuffling. My Morning Jacket’s Evil Urges was the biggest victim, dropping from nine to 24. And congratulations Rock N Roll Jesus, as Kid Rock’s album went platinum in its 37th week. [Photo: Getty]

Atonement for Your Illegal Downloading Sins: $5 Feeling bad because you just downloaded the entire Prince catalog in less than fifteen minutes? Disappointed at yourself for not paying anything for Radiohead’s In Rainbows? Let Dear Rockers help you make amends (or at minimum clear your conscience). In the tradition of anonymous whisper site PostSecret, Dear Rockers asks Soulseekers and Bit Torrenteers to write an artful letter of apology to artists whose music they may have downloaded illegally. The result is an amusing Web site that posts the letters fans write to bands like Wolf Parade and Whitney Houston asking for forgiveness. The price of atonement: $5, sent to the band’s management or official fan club (Dear Rockers provides all the addresses). Props go to the girl who sent Axl Rose five bucks in change. Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, your check is in the mail. Related Stories: Alternate Takes: Just $9,250 a Song!
