Rewind: The Week in Rock Daily• At Lollapalooza, we survived the Rage riots, caught Radiohead, NIN and Kanye, hung out with Perry Farrell and the Black Keys and a whole lot more. Check out all our coverage here. • Iron Man and Tropic Thunder star Robert Downey Jr. took over the cover to talk about how he survived years of addiction to become the new king of the summer box office. Peter Travers also dove into the actor’s acclaimed filmography to spotlight RDJ’s best performances. • We discovered that Bono is a RollingStone.com reader as the U2 frontman tried to post his own recollections about recording Boy in the comments section of David Fricke’s review. He went over word count, but thankfully you can read the full text here. • Wolfmother lost two members and Iggy & the Stooges lost all their gear. [Photo: Grabowski/Retna]

Wolfmother Split, Singer to Recruit New MembersAfter only one album, Wolfmother have announced via their website that they are splitting up. Initially, keyboardist/bassist Chris Ross left the Australian trio, citing irreconcilable personal and musical differences. Not wanting to simply fill the void and continue on in a changed line up, drummer Myles Heskett followed Ross’ exit. That leaves singer/guitarist Andrew Stockdale, who said he would recruit new musicians and continue on as Wolfmother. After touring the world from 2006 to early 2007 on the strength of their self-titled debut, “longstanding frictions within the group” finally came to the forefront, forcing the band to take an extended break to consider its future in late 2007. Earlier this year, the band regrouped to start work on their new album and to “road-test” new material. But after this weekend’s Splendour in the Grass Festival in their native Australia, Ross decided he had had enough. The band said they ask “fans to please understand that in spite of their best efforts over a long period of time, they just could not find a harmonious way to work together and that has lead to the decisions announced today.” In their short history, Wolfmother sold a half-million copies of their self-titled debut album in the U.S., became a Guitar Hero favorite and even won the Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance in 2007 for “Woman.”

International Report: Live Earth Sydney We asked Rolling Stone’s international editions to report on the Live Earth concerts nearest them. Here’s the report from Dan Lander of Rolling Stone Australia on Live Earth Sydney: WHO PLAYED: Wolfmother, Jack Johnson, Crowded House, Blue King Brown, Toni Collette, Sneaky Sound System, Ghostwriters, Paul Kelly, Eskimo Joe, Missy Higgins, John Butler Trio HIGHLIGHTS: • Crowded House joined by everybody on the bill for a sing-along version of “Weather With You”, a song which took on a new meaning under the circumstances. • An intense-as-hell drum solo from the John Butler Trio’s Michael Barker, the perfect foil to Butler’s equally intense demand to Australia’s leaders not to introduce nuclear energy as an answer to global warming (we have much better options). The JBT set was a standout overall – there is no one on the planet who sounds better at an outside gig than these guys. • Paul Kelly joined by Kev Carmody, Missy Higgins and John Butler for “From Little Things Big Things Grow”. The whole crowd sung along – all eleven verses. MOST UNEXPECTED MOMENT: Academy-Award nominated actress Toni Collette and her band the Finish closing their set with a very fitting cover of T-Rex’s “Children of the Revolution”, proving not every actor who tries their hand at music need be as bad as Russell Crowe.

Wolfmother Break Out “Cosmic Egg” at Secret New York ShowPhoto: Danny ClinchA boozy night out was all it took to convince Wolfmother to give up their only night off this week. The Aussie stoner-rock heroes are currently in the midst of an East Coast jaunt opening for the Killers, but last night they also made a surprise appearance at the tiny Bowery Electric club in New York. The band admitted on stage that the idea for the gig emerged during a drinking session the night before and only confirmed the show at around 3 p.m. in the afternoon. In the end

Wolfmother’s Stockdale Rocks Pair of “Cosmic Egg” Tracks AcousticWolfmother frontman Andrew Stockdale recently stopped by the Rolling Stone studios to perform acoustic renditions of a pair of songs that’ll appear on the band’s second album Cosmic Egg, and stripped of their prog-metal backgrounds, Stockdale’s songwriting and melodies shine through. In our studio, Stockdale busted out “In the Castle” — which he improvised on acoustic guitar on the spot in the video above — and the multi-suite “In the Morning.” Watch the performance and check out Stockdale telli

Wolfmother’s Stockdale Returns With New BandmembersPhoto: Wood/Getty Five months after jettisoning his band’s drummer and bassist, Wolfmother’s lone remaining member Andrew Stockdale made his return to the stage with three new additions backing him. Performing under the temporary band name White Feather, Stockdale and his new Wolfmother played a pair of shows this weekend, one at the Valley Studios in Brisbane and the other at Sydney’s Oxford Art Factory, according to ABC.au. The band’s sets included hits from Wolfmother’s only album (their 2005 self-titled debut) including “Woman” and “Joker & The Thief,” as well as a batch of new material. In August 2008 drummer Myles Haskett and bassist Chris Ross left Wolfmother, citing personal and musical differences with Stockdale, who kept control of the Wolfmother moniker. Ross and Haskett have since focused on their side project, reportedly called Doom Buggy. “A few things have happened,” Stockdale told the Sydney crowd this weekend. “I have got to say it’s so great just to be able to play some music and share the music — do what we know, do what we love.” The reconfigured Wolfmother will next play a gig on March 22nd at the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide. Wolfmother’s spokeswoman said this weekend’s shows were essentially warm-up gigs for the new lineup before the Clipsal show, which would be a Wolfmother and not a White Feather concert. “Wolfmother is still Andrew’s thing, so it was just for the purposes of keeping it low-key,” the spokeswoman said, but she wouldn’t confirm if Stockdale’s new recruits are permanent members of the band. Wolfmother Hard at Work on “Cinematic, Epic” New Album Good news for fans of asskicking Australian bands: Wolfmother is hard at work on a new album. According to singer Andrew Stockdale, the band is looking to release the as-yet-untitled album early next year. “It’s kind of cinematic, and it’s kind of epic,” Stockdale says of the new disc. “But there’s also this fully-aggressive side that’s undeniably explosive.” Wolfmother have yet to select a producer, but Stockdale says they have about ten songs ready to go, including a track called “Back Home,” which is one of Stockdale’s favorites. “Other bands are like, ‘Yeah, we wrote sixty songs and edited it down to this,’” says Stockdale, who’s been wrtiting both at his new house in Brisbane and while vacationing in Byron Bay. “We spend a lot of time on each song, crafting it, changing the key, changing the arrangement, and so on. We don’t like to write thousands of songs.”
