Animal Collective’s “Merriweather Post Pavilion” Streaming Now On Rhapsody

Photo: Gries/Getty Animal Collective’s weirdly breathtaking Merriweather Post Pavilion is quickly becoming one of 2009’s most acclaimed albums. Now, five days before the CD hits stores, you can stream the Baltimore/Brooklyn band’s ninth album in its entirety over at Rhapsody. Yes, we know the album is already out on vinyl and has been distributed illegally over the Internet, but if you don’t have a record player and like listening to music without a guilty conscience, this stream of MPP is the way to go. Enjoy the psychedelic sounds of the Beach Boys-inspired “Brother Sport” and “Guys Eyes,” described in our three-and-a-half star album review as “a cauldron of the Pet Sounds vocal fractals.” Our review says “Lion in a Coma” and “No More Runnin’” “get lost in their own weirdness” but here’s a second opinion: we think those songs are the highlight of Merriweather. Chester Bennington and Chris Cornell Preview Projekt Revolution

Linkin Park’s annual Projekt Revolution Tour kicks off tonight outside of Boston, so Rock Daily sat down with LP’s Chester Bennington and co-headliner Chris Cornell to talk about this summer’s jaunt. “What I like about doing a touring festival, especially Projekt Rev, is the fact these are bands that I can get really excited about since I’m part of the reason they’re there. The Beatles Reportedly Heading to “Guitar Hero” or “Rock Band”

Following the success of two weeks of the Beatles’ music on American Idol, the Fab Four’s catalog may be branching out again: Reps for the band are reportedly talking to both Activision and MTV Games about possibly releasing a Guitar Hero or Rock Band based around Beatles’ tunes. According to a source close to the negotiations, the final deal could be worth millions, but first must get the approval of both Apple Corps. and EMI. Apple Corps’ tight grip on the Beatles catalog has loosened since Jeff Jones became the company’s chief executive, as evidenced by the band’s music appearing in American Idol, Cirque du Soleil Love show and the film Across the Universe. “To my view, it’s only a matter of time before we see Beatles songs that are the original recordings in motion pictures, in television work, and yes, maybe even one day in a commercial,” said Sony/ATV chief executive Martin Bandier, who holds more than 200 Beatles copyrights. Whichever video game company wins the battle to release a Beatles-themed game, a source says a deal “could be reached in a matter of weeks.”

Fricke’s Picks: Motorpsycho

“Suite: Little Lucid Moments,” the opening track on Little Lucid Moments (Rune Grammofon), by the Norwegian power trio Motorpsycho, is not little. It is a mini-album in itself, an improbable union over four parts and 21 minutes of Tool, Goo-era Sonic Youth and the ‘69 Yes: angular riffing, volcanic guitar-bass-drums debate and surprising pop-sheen vocal harmonies. The second section is well named — “A Hoof to the Head” — and the gripping tumult in the third stretch, “Hallucifuge (Hyperrealistically Speaking),” explains why Motorpsycho are established prog-metal stars abroad. Bassist-singer Bent Saether and guitarist-singer Hans Magnus Ryan started the band in 1989, taking the name from Russ Meyer’s 1965 biker-gang B movie and throwing caution to the arctic winds over a long discography of hard-rock indulgence, including the two-CD epics Trust Us (1998) and Black Hole/Blank Canvas (2006). Little Lucid Moments — a single disc, and Saether and Ryan’s first album with new drummer Kenneth Kapstad — is pith in comparison, but just barely. The finale, “The Alchemyst,” is a 12-minute whirl of power-pop clang and polyrhythmic jamming with a soft space choir landing at the end. You wouldn’t want it any shorter. [Photo: Anja Basma]

The Real Ima Robot: Who Needs a Drummer When You Can Hire Droids?

San Francisco rocker Jay Vance had it with broke, debauched, unhygienic and irresponsible bandmates — wait, is he living The Rock Life or what? — so he decided to replace his band’s rhythm section with robots (insert dumb-drummer joke here). Vance built his first rocking droid out of scrap-metal in his bedroom back in 1997; its chest was an autoharp. Now he has a whole band of them, Captured! By Robots. Vance powers the entire group — yes, they play metal (insert rim shot here) — using three computers plus pneumatic actuators that make the robots’ mechanical digits play like rock stars. Captured! By Robots’ opening act is Butterscotch and Cocoa, two bear-inspired robots. Vance’s goal is to create a scenario in which the audience’s human reaction to the robots make them real: “When the robots swear at the crowd and the crowd swears back, that’s when you know they’re real to the audience.” [Photo by Snapcult]
