If you have been following the ZZ Top album reviews you know there is a lot of controversy surrounding some of the remastering of the various albums. I have the 2006 CD versions of Tres Hombres and Fandango and agree with other opinions that these were a worthy remaster. Picked up a 1990 release copy of Deguello and find it to be quite good CD version.
However this 2-album Import version of Eliminator and Afterburner really drops the ball. Eliminator is like listening to an old clock radio that's chucked under a five gallon bucket filled with wool socks. Well maybe not that bad but if I recall correctly the old cassette had a lot more life and sparkle.
Think I'm overreacting, well I pulled out the album copy of Eliminator, dropped the needle and that "little old band from Texas" just jumped into the room with me.
Afterburner is slightly better, but I'd give this copy a pass and hope that the record company gets around to remastering the rest of the ZZ Top catalog.
Just goes to show you that even if it says Import, doesn't mean it's good.
