Long Island’s Bayside are apparently determined to win the year’s Most Resilient Band Award, as they soldier on without a lag in their step after a tragic 2005 van accident killed their drummer John “Beatz” Holohan and severely injured bassist Nick Ghanbarian. If anything, their third album, The Walking Wounded, is more upbeat than their previous efforts. Confronted with real pain and tragedy, the group has recalibrated their misery index. No more whining about the lateness of the lunch cart or the insensitivity of certain young lasses. Like all good “emo” bands, Bayside’s lyrics read like a self-empowerment book, with lots of “keep your head up” aphorisms to keep the tiger in your tank purring as you run perilously close to empty. “I’ve got a stage and a mic, which I use to say things you won’t like. But I spent years thinking I was alone. Now I know that I’m not and I’m sharing that comfort with those that think hope is lost,” sings Anthony Raneri on “I And I.” Hey, I read the literature at my psychiatrist’s office, too. But I’ve never been swift enough to lift it for a catchy tune. Which is why they are loved by utter millions and the only people who return my calls work for collection agencies. Ah, fate.
