Black Stone Cherry’s first single “Lonely Train” quotes Plato and tells us “you can’t judge a book by its cover,” but take a look at the young Kentucky group’s debut album cover and tell me you don’t immediately imagine a band somewhere between Kings Of Leon, the Black Crowes and Black Oak Arkansas. It sure ain’t gonna be Brit Pop! From the opening riff of “Rain Wizard,” it’s apparent that these guys have practiced their hard rock and boogie moves to perfection. Drummer John Fred Young, whose dad is a founding member of the Grammy-winning Kentucky Headhunters, keeps his bandmates on their toes with a defiant, anarchic sense of time that pushes singer Chris Robertson to sing as if he has no fear of a hernia. BSC have touches of that Nickelback grunge in them, but a track as tough and smooth as “When The Weight Comes Down” marks them as the superior bet. They will hurt you, if you’re not careful.
