Disco de Deerhoof: “Green Cosmos”

This EP is one that is, for reasons unbeknownst to me, often overlooked. But, to put it simply, you need this in your collection. Deerhoof explore a totally different side of themselves in the songs on this EP. It is, to say the least, an amazing work full of etremely poignant and beautiful songs (in their own unique way)... Fans of CIBO MATTO will love this.

i have NO idea why no one has reviewed this yet.... its a side of deerhoof that we dont really see, but an interesting side.... although only an ep, its enough songs to make an epic.

all songs are good, different in their own way, but the best one by far is spiral golden town. i dont know what it is, but that song really got me.... order and listen for yourself!

what an amazing AMAZING EP, PLEASE (!!!) dont skip this from your collection.... because i can guarantee you, its well worthy.

a perfect distillation of more recent, ADHD deerhoof, and with a total runtime of ~20 minutes, it's perfect for ritalin-poppers everywhere. Most of the tracks cover familiar territory, but the EP's majestic centerpiece Spiral Golden Town injects a bollywood-esque foundation with extracts of cyndi lauper to reach new heights of gorgeous, semi-ridiculous songcrafting. absolutely essential.

Green Cosmos, initially a Japan-only EP, has been released domestically by Menlo Park records.

Due to it's proximity to other great releases like "Apple O" and "The Runners Four" in the Deerhoof catalog, "Green Cosmos" may be a bit overlooked. EPs, in general, often surface briefly and then sink into obscurity. The indie-rock landscape is littered with great EPs, and this is one of them.

Spiky, melodic, and bursting with playful ideas within its concise 15 minute run-time, Green Cosmos listens like a psychedelic spaghetti western directed by Deerhoof. Fragments of theme songs sit astride casually brilliant jazz vamps and rock riffs, which in typical fashion announce their arrival and then promptly transform into something completely new.

From the percussion workouts of the title track to the Fripp-ian delicacy of songs like "Malalauma" and the oddly familiar trumpet fanfares of "Spiral Golden Town," Deerhoof continues to not-so-subtly juxtapose kitsch elements with shards of avant-garde dissonance and rhythmic left turns. One could easily get lost in their full-length releases alone, but the Green Cosmos EP should not be missed. It's a real treasure of the EP format.
