Deftones Album: “Minerva [UK CD]”

The imports from the Deftones newest self-titled album have been by far the best imports ever released for album. Most of the old Deftones imports just had the title track, and some live songs, or maybe an acoustic one now and then, but I guess the record company finally decided to give the people what they want. Both of the Imports for the self-titled, "Minerva" and "Hexagram", contain unreleased music. I think this is the first time when all the singles from the album have had an unreleased song on them. "Minerva" is definitely the better buy of the two however. Not only do you get the wonderfully magnificent title song, but you also get two unreleased rarities. The first is a cover of Helmet's "Sinatra". The Deftones definitely make the song all their own, and when it's done, you can't really imagine that the song wasn't theirs to begin with. "Sleep Walk" is an odd experimental cover song that will definitely turn some heads of fans. All in all this is a great import single to get, because you can't beat what you're getting and the price you're paying. I think they're going for $5.00 on here. What better reason to buy?

If you were to order this import, no matter the cost, only for the title track - 'Minerva' - I would understand utterly and completely, because even with only three tracks, this song is so utterly gorgeous that it's worth it. As something that evokes strong emotions in everyone, while most universally agree on its beauty, it's a hidden gem in the world. I would recommend this song to any living, breathing person on earth, and say it with my held held high. If you haven't heard 'Minerva', then you need to.

Well the first thing to be said is the Deftones are an amazing band with a variety of unique talents. As I have mentioned before on an earlier review of Around the Fur Chino's lyrics are unbelievable and something to inspire. The whole band really needs to get paid amage but unfortuantly this single was a bit of a disopointment.

Minerva, the lead single off of the self titled album is gorgeous

and is something for each person to lay back and move to. Helmet is a great band that unfortuantly never recieved the attention they deserved. Defones aparently thought them to be a great band as well as it seems as though they both have much in common (chord stylings and arranging). As far as the cover is concerned it is a good song. I like Helemt's version, i like Deftone's version, but unfortunatly the Deftones just sound like there playing a Helemt song and there isn't anything that is added to or taken away. Lastly the ending track is "interesting" to say the least but nothing worth 12 dollars for. At the same time these two extra songs will hold you over if you don't have the new album, but it wont last long.

This is a fairly good CD single, as it contains two non-LP tracks. Since most people who would even consider getting an import CD single by Deftones probably already has Minerva, I will just review the two extra tracks.

Sinatra (15/15) This is an awesome track with heavy, suspenceful sounding riffs and somewhat resembles an early Korn song. I am not sure whether it is a cover or not (I found a website that listed it as a Helmet cover), but whatever it is, it is good. Very satisfied with this one.

Sleep Walk (6/15) I am very dissapointed with this. I was expecting another killer track like Sinatra, but what I got was a jazzy 2 minute guitar tune with no lyrics. It sounds like something they play in a 40's restaurant. I guess it's good for what it is, but I don't like it.

I gave this single three stars. 5 for Sinatra, 1 for Sleep Walk. That averages to 3.
