Jefferson Airplane: Paul Kantner (vocals, guitar); Grace Slick (vocals); Jorma Kaukonen (guitar); Jack Casady (bass guitar).
<p>Recorded in 1972 at the Jefferson Airplane's final show before re-emerging as Jefferson Starship two years later, LAST FLIGHT captures the end of an era. Over the course of these two discs, we're taken on a tour of the Airplane's history, as they tear into career highlights like their signature smash, "Somebody to Love," all snarling guitar and wailing vocals; the moody sci-fi folk-rock of "Wooden Ships;" and the psychedelic glory of "Crown of Creation." The sounds the band seared into the heads of the crowd at the Winterland that night seem just as potent all these decades later.

- Now this is more like it!
Here's a raw,but very exciting document of the last ever Jefferson Airplane concert from 1972.
There are a few missed notes, and some flat spots here and there,....but this shows that the band still had some musical fire to spew even in it's last moments.
Avoid the other "Live at Golden Gate Park" release from this Charly/Snapper series though. That one ,although from the band's prime period, has an horrible mix where most of the guitar is missing, and the drums and vocals are too "in your face".
"Last Flight" is a flawed but very cool document for all the Airplane fans out there!

- Historic, yes; Great? Not So Much......
This is an interesting release. It documents the last Jeff Air show at Winterland in'72. There are good songs and bad ( the Papa John blues number is particularly grating) ones, but most of the band is in fine form. The biggest flaw is the pedestrian drumming of Johnny Barbata. He must have had a good drug connection or something, because his playing drags the Kaukonen/Casady axis back at every turn. Spencer Dryden (R.I.P.) was a phenomenal player who knew how to swing and if you compare this recording with "Bless It's Pointed Little Head" or the more recent "Live At The Fillmore East", his absence is huge!!! And the less said about David Freiberg, the better. Still, if you dig the Airplane, this is a very enjoyable set from one of the best 60's bands ever.

- Sinking Ship
This album is the sound of a sinking ship. But the sound they made going down!! When I went to this concert I was amazed but later upon hearing 30 Seconds I put my own judgement into question. It sounded mostly pretty uninspired. Could this really be the same concert I saw? True some of the songs were from a different concert but still. Now comes Last Flight and while not as great as I initially thought the show was, makes me see what I saw at the time. This is sort of the Airplane in a bad mood, with factions squaring off in each corner, but channeling those feelings into an imperfect but staggering show of raw emotion. It's almost more exhasting rather than enlightening but a worthwile trip nontheless. Just don't make this your first experiance with the Airplane

- This is not the complete show! No No No and no!!
Hi there from airplane world:
As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" I had received so much email about this release that I hope I can share some information with you. The quality is real strong and the date is historic Winterland, San Francisco, September 22, 72. It was the last time the Airplane would fly until 1989 but...........
With plenty of room the CD leaves out the encore when Marty Balin returned! Dress Rap > You Wear Your Dresses Too Short is nowhere to be found! The most important tune of the night!
You can get the missing song on the Airplane Box Set "Loves You" but that isn't the point. You can not claim to have a complete show when you are overlooking a big part of the historic night.
If you don't own this previously you can enjoy the final time the plane takes off but you'll have to pretend you left before the encore to beat the traffic home.
Thanks and be well,
Craig Fenton

- Last Flight Indeed
This show is definately for the true die-hard fan of Jefferson Airplane. When the band is cooking, this show is very hot. Unfortunately Grace Slick is not in any other form here other than bad. I have several bootleg shows from Jefferson Starship from this era and Grace is often much better than she is here. The last night of the tour, a bit too much partying before the show? It definately shows in her performance. While the drumming from Johnny Barbata is rather heavy handed, it is definately sevicable for the band. Paul, Jack, Jorma and Papa John hold this show together and really make it worthwhile to listen to. I guess it's worthwhile to have for the "Historic Show" that it is, but there's a lot better live material out there of this band.
