Suicidal Tendencies Album: “No Mercy Fool!/The Suicidal Family”

OK.

I've been a fan of ST since Mike and crew were fifteen or sixteen years old--and I was the same. I grew up in the HarDCore Scene and couldn't much stand any of the West Coast Bands when there were the Bad Brains, Minor Threat, Government Issue, MDC, The Meatmen, all the great NYC bands like Fear, and on...all playing in the DC area.

And there was Suicidal from the West Coast--Venice, CA. to be exact.

They were very good from album one--and better live.

They had a number of side projects through the years, including the wonderful Infectious Grooves, and a single album from No Mercy.

That album was worn to the bone by the time I made it into wave files--and is very much on my permanent playlist.

A few tunes from it, like Waking the Dead made it onto the Join The Army EP--but never quite rang true compared to the originals.

This album takes most of those tunes and does them today. It does them as proud as the ReBoot flavor of ST's first album did.

I like it so much that I am apt to listen to the new version and the older (less studio quality) garage feel version side by side on my home system, in the car, and via headphones with headphone amp. In all cases, I'm still a fan of the first versions--but love these equally. I especially like the production values that add more clarity and bounce to this album. Buy it. You'll find that Mike and Company are as good as they were (if not better.)

This album is a must have! It mainly consists of "Join the Army" (1987) and "No Mercy" (1988) remakes that sound way better thanks to: a) excellent production b) Steve Bruner on bass - he's waaay better than the incredible Robert Trujillo and is probably one of the baddest bassist in the world c) Steve's older brother Ron Bruner Jr. is the drummer on half the record, and this guy is by far the best drummer ST has ever had, and considered a drumming phenomenon, dude plays with Stanley Clark, Kenny Garret, and a bunch of jazz dudes d) Dean Pleasants is a freak on guitar who will make you forget the unforgettable Rocky George e) Mike Clark plays faster and heavier than ever f) Cyco Miko is still as psycho as ever!

The only remake I didn't dig was "Join the ST Army" (for a better remake, see the version on the album "Prime Cuts"). Otherwise, my favorite tracks were "Suicidal Maniac", "Born To Be Cyco", "We're Evil," and "Crazy But Proud".

"Come Alive" was also on "The Year of the Cyco" and is probably the best new ST song since their heyday in the early 90s.

It's crazy that Mike Muir is now 47, with all the energy and craziness this record brings you would think he was still 20 something. And as far as the musicians, all I can say is they are masters of their instruments. Mike Clark is playing ridiculously blazing riffs, Dean Pleasants absolutely shreds, the Bruner brothers are an incredible bassist and drummer. These guys are playing at a level that most bands nowadays cannot match. Everything just sounds much more crisp and technical than it did before, I still love the originals, but quality wise this is definitely 10x better. I highly recommend this album to anybody down with ST or anybody who wants to hear what some OG Venice thrash speed metal sounds like. If this is any indication of what their new record will sound like, I think we may be in for the greatest ST album of all time.

this should have been released years ago this is the suicidal songs people love even if it's no mercy/mike clarks stuff mike turned this band in to a monster from punk underground legend to major heavy weight contender look at how will i laugh tomorrow cd from join the army enough said.

some of these songs appear on year of the cyco cd,some were ST classics,but some were totally lost songs never heard to most.great cd in all a must have for ST fans of old ST for life!!!

this cd is a great addition to the ST catalog but one problem the bass is way to over powering in the mix bass in important to the St sound but this is too much it's like lead bass and the guitar are back set in my oppinion but great music.
