- so good, so short
if you're a fan of plaid you'll be a fan of this disc. 'scoobs' IS an updated version of 'scoobs in columbia' with its sassy latin flair. 'eph' IS a different take on 'seph' off 'not for threes'. However 'bo bootch' and 'cold' are TWO tracks I've never heard before. 'bo bootch' is a cool, hip-hoppish beat laden track. the outstanding track for me is 'cold'. I don't know what the music fan from Londonberry NH is talking about but there IS NOT a track called 'ol' on 'not for threes' and 'cold' DOES NOT sound like anything I've ever heard plaid do before. 'cold' is pure late night minimal trance, something plaid (as far as I'm aware) has never done before. the type of stuff i used to dance to when i was a raver. pulsating synths and a steady 4/4 beat then this skipping CD percussion slips in the track but done in a way that at first you think the disc is skipping. for that track alone this disc is worth picking up. if anyone out there knows of other artists who do music that sounds remotely close to what plaid has done with 'cold', email me and let me know. i've tried monolake but they're too repetitious with very little rhythmic progression. i only wish there was at least one more track similar to 'cold' on this release. overall, very good stuff for those new or old to plaid.
- Plaid - Peel Session
At long last, Plaid's bizarre take on Latin music, "Scoobs" -- previously "Scoobs in Columbia" -- makes its appearance on the PEEL SESSIONS. This is early Plaid, no doubt, but it has a distinctive character and sense of fun. "Eph" is simplistic, but even its rudimentary synth pads puts some modern IDM to shame. The rough hip-hop beats of "Bo Bootch" presages the modern resurgance in abstract hip-hop, and "Cold" is almost Basic Channel-like in its frosty minimalistic house dub. Sweet!

- I love Plaid.
This wasn't what I expected. But it's still great. 'Cold' is another prime example of Plaid's vast musical multi-talent. Scoobs has an odd sample of some spanish music. a nice dancy piano. . . Go buy plaid.
