Flo Rida’s “Right Round” Shatters Digital Singles Record With a Little Help From an ’80s Hook

Photo: Ritchie/WireImage Almost after a year since his “Low” dominated the Singles chart for 10 consecutive weeks, Flo Rida has found himself back on top, and in record-breaking fashion with “Right Round.” In its debut week, “Right Round” was downloaded about 636,000 times according to Billboard.biz, shattering the record Flo Rida himself set in January 2008 when “Low” was purchased 467,000 times in an extended, post-Christmas week. The seven-day record for most downloads was incidentally set last week, when Eminem, Dr. Dre and 50 Cent’s “Crack a Bottle” was purchased 418,000 times. Flo Rida made sure that record was short lived. “Right Round” is the first single off Flo’s second album R.O.O.T.S., due out April 7th. As Coolfer points out, if those 636,000 single downloads are the equivalent of roughly 63,600 copies in album sales, then Flo Rida would have sold enough this week to place eighth on this week’s albums chart, ahead of the resurgent Viva La Vida. Of course, Flo Rida’s “Right Round” came with a built-in hook that almost guaranteed its success, using a sample of ’80s new wavers Dead Or Alive’s “You Spin Me Round (Like a Record),” a song that was popular in its own era but had a late-’90s resurgence thanks to The Wedding Singer. Rihanna similarly has constructed a whole oeuvre of turning new wave and ’80s samples into Top 40 gold: “Don’t Stop The Music” borrows from Michael Jackson’s “Wanna Be Startin’ Something,” “SOS” borrows from Soft Cell’s “Tainted Love” and Rihanna’s “Shut Up and Drive” is a fuzzed-out version of New Order’s “Blue Monday.” Similarly, Kid Rock fused Warren Zevon’s “Werewolves of London” and Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Sweet Home Alabama” to form “All Summer Long,” one of the biggest hits of 2008. Consumers evidently are continually willing to shell out money for decades-old hits being reappropriated by contemporary artists, as the success of Flo Rida’s “Right Round” well demonstrates.

Also, after you finish the song, another character in the game rips you off and becomes a whole lot more popular, then kills himself, then reappears in the 2009 PS3 game "Guitar Hero Rocks Every Top 100 List Ever Made." You then get really fat. 7. Kenny Loggins - Movie Medley A rapid-fire assault of unforgettable 80s opening-sequence themes, opening with "Danger Zone" into "I'm Alright" into "Footloose" and then closing with "Danny's Song," which wasn't in a movie, but, you know, who doesn't like "Danny's Song?" 6. Soft Cell - "Tainted Love" There aren't really any guitars in this song, but having it in the game would allow you to listen to a decent sound-alike of a tune everybody enjoys, and as long as you don't play any notes, you get 100%. 5. The Replacements - "I Will Dare" As you're playing this jangly, upbeat alternative rocker, an actual 80s college begins to form around you; if you manage to five-star it on Expert, your character then literally attends the University of Minnesota for four years, which occurs in the game in real time, though if you're connected online, you can swap R.E.M. and Hüsker Dü LPs with other students. 4. Once you set the clock up, you can start using the ITZBEEN. You click the icon you are working on - ie: after your baby is changed, you press the diaper icon to start the clock. This way, you'll know how long ago you changed junior. Instead of asking yourself, "What time did I change the baby? You'll actually know how long it's been! Which is how the product got its name by the way! Father turned inventor, Greg Sheldon, used his engineering background to create a cell phone sized device with four timers to help him and wife Kris to remember when they changed their son, when he was fed, how long he slept or was awake, or even when he was given medicine. Since my husband doesn't believe in wearing a watch at home, the ITZBEEN Timer, with the built in clock and buttons will be great for keeping track of our next baby's info.
